Sultan seeks UN forces in Sabah Posted: 08 Mar 2013 09:20 PM PST The Sulu Sultan says this would prevent further bloodshed and save lives This was raised by sultanate spokesman Abraham Idjirani, who also called on Malaysia to let local and foreign journalists see for themselves that most of those who died in the latest assault by government forces were actually unarmed civilians. His call came on the heels of an appeal from UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon for Malaysia and the sultanate's forces to end the violence in Sabah. The Moro National Liberation Front also pushed for the deployment of UN peacekeepers to Sabah to serve as "buffer force," MNLF spokesman Emmanuel Fontanilla said in a text message to The Philippine STAR on Thursday. Idjirani said the sultanate's forces may be forced to fight back if Malaysian forces try to finish them off. He said the campaign by Malaysian forces would be costly because the sultanate's forces were trained in real battle in Mindanao, as many of them had fought the Philippine government as members of the MNLF. "Until that is done, everything is subject to debate," Idjirani said, referring to journalists being given access to Sabah. He said the sultanate lost only 10 fighters, contrary to Malaysia's claim that it had killed 52 Filipinos. Malaysian Federal Police chief Ismil Omar also said that one of those killed by his men held the rank of general in the so-called Royal Sulu Army. On Thursday, Kiram declared a "cessation of hostilities" after Malaysia's rejection of his unilateral ceasefire offer. |
Manila starts probe on Sabah conflict, summons Kiram adviser Posted: 08 Mar 2013 09:20 PM PST KUALA LUMPUR, March 9 — The Philippine National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) kicked off its investigation into the Sabah violence yesterday, summoning Sulu Sultanate adviser Pastor "Boy" Saycon for questioning next Tuesday. Media reports in the Philippines said the subpoena was likely part of the NBI's pursuit of conspiracy claims in the ongoing armed conflict between Malaysian security forces and the Sulu "royal army" in the east Malaysian state. Quoting the Sultanate's spokesman Abraham Idjirani, The Philippine Star said this was the start of the government's "crackdown" on the self-proclaimed Sulu Sultan Jamalul Kiram III's followers, who are now bracing themselves for the possibility of facing criminal charges for starting the rebellion in Sabah. The daily said the subpoena, signed by Intelligence Services deputy director Reynaldo Esmeralda, was delivered at 4pm yesterday to Saycon's office in Makati by NBI agents. Saycon, the Council for Philippine Affairs (COPA) secretary-general, has been linked to destabilisation plots in past administrations, according to ABS-CBN News in its online report yesterday. "I suspect it would be because of the recent developments and the entry into Sabah," Saycon told The Philippine Star, despite admitting he had yet to read the subpoena. "It is anticipated that supporters of the sultan will be charged. They are now preparing the ground for more subpoenas… the threat of the government has been lingering for the past two weeks." The political strategist also reported that the Sulu Sultanate has put together a team of lawyers to assist supporters who may be investigated or hauled to court over the Sabah violence, which Malaysian authorities said on Thursday have claimed the lives of 52 Filipinos and eight Malaysians. Q and A on Sabah | DFA updates details on PH govt actions Posted: 08 Mar 2013 09:19 PM PST 1. What transpired in the discussions between Secretary del Rosario and the Malaysian officials? The Secretary, in pursuing a peaceful resolution, has been in contact on a daily basis with the Foreign Minister and other officials of Malaysia. The trip to Malaysia is consistent with that effort. During this particular trip, the Secretary continued seeking the exercise of maximum tolerance to avert further loss of lives. The Secretary also followed up on the Philippines' requests for a full briefing on the situation, for clearance for the Philippine Navy ship to proceed to Lahad Datu and for humanitarian and consular services to be made available to the Filipinos in Lahad Datu. While in Malaysia, the Secretary likewise sought the consideration for women and other civilians not involved in the hostilities to be able to exit the area of conflict. The Secretary was also specifically tasked by the President to explore avenues to end the standoff that is acceptable to all parties. 2. Was the Secretary able to achieve his objectives? The abovementioned requests are still being considered in light of the security environment. 3. What avenues did the Philippine Government explore domestically for a peaceful resolution to save lives? From the outset of this conflict, the Philippine Government has been pursuing options which could lead to a peaceful resolution where no lives would be lost. Sultan Jamalul Kiram's group was well aware of this as they were directly involved. These options, which involve the peaceful withdrawal of the Kiram group from Lahad Datu in order to ensure that lives are not compromised, were relentlessly pursued on a 24/7 basis. Unfortunately, some of these plans did not merit acceptance by all parties and those that did could not be implemented in time. The Philippine Government's constructive efforts were overtaken by events that were beyond its control. With the peaceful withdrawal, the President initially offered that no charges would be filed and that an avenue for discussion would be made available. 4. What avenues did the Secretary explore with the Malaysian officials? Read More / Baca Lagi >> |

100 Filipinos arrive in Tawi-Tawi from strife-torn Sabah Posted: 08 Mar 2013 07:59 PM PST By Julie Alipala, Karlos Manlupig BONGAO, Tawi-Tawi — Traveling for hours aboard two vessels, at least 100 Filipinos from Sandakan arrived in Bongao late Friday night as Malaysian authorities continued their purging operation against armed followers of the Sultanate of Sulu and their suspected supporters in Sabah. The displaced persons are presently staying in a temporary evacuation center in Bongao while an inter-agency crisis unit is already attending to their needs. In Sulu, nearly a thousand people have arrived since early this week — including those outside what Malaysian authorities had described as the red zones of Lahad Datu, Semporna and Kunak — in a bid to evade the crackdown that have not spared even Sabahans known as Orang Suluk (people who originated from Sulu). Jolo Mayor Hussin Amin has called on the government to intervene to ensure that innocent Filipinos in Sabah were spared from the crackdown that has resulted in the a |

Kirams: To surrender still not an option Posted: 08 Mar 2013 07:47 PM PST MANILA, Philippines -- The daughter of self-proclaimed Sulu Sultan Jamalul Kiram III on Saturday said the followers of the sultan are standing firm on their decision not to surrender even after the foreign affairs department said that laying down their arms is the only way left to prevent further bloodshed in Sabah. Read More / Baca Lagi >>Speaking with radio dzMM, Princess Jaycel said the group of Raja Muda Agbimuddin Kiram still won't leave Sabah despite the attacks being launched against them by Malaysian security forces. "Nananatili po, ganun pa rin ang stand ni Raja Muda and his people that this is honor above life. Sobra na po ang ginawa at sobra pa ang ginagawa ngayon ng Malaysian government," she said. "Ang gusto lang po nila ay manatili po doon... Ito po ay kanilang tahanan. They want to live there peacefully," she added. Foreign Affairs spokesman Raul Hernandez on Friday said Raja Muda's group is left with no other choice but to lay down their arms after the call for ceasefire was rejected by the Malaysian government. Malaysian police had said the Filipinos were not showing any sign of surrendering, thus the operation against them will continue. Hernandez said Malaysian forces are determined to "destroy militants" in Lahad Datu town. "Ang balak talaga ng Malaysia is in order to preserve their dignity, security and sovereignty in that area ay ubusin sila at ayaw nating mangyari ito," he told dzMM Saturday. Another brother of Sulu Sultan placed on Malaysia police's wanted list Posted: 08 Mar 2013 07:46 PM PST Malaysian police have placed another brother of Sulu Sultan Jamalul Kiram III high on its wanted list, following a standoff in Sabah in February that led to deadly clashes this month, a Malaysian news site reported on Saturday. A report on Malaysia's The Star online did not name the brother but described him as someone in his 60s and involved in the fish transportation business. The man is said to travel frequently from Lahad Datu to Kunak, Semporna, Sandakan, Tawau, and Kota Kinabalu, it added. Malaysian forces had been hunting down Raja Muda Azzimudie Kiram, the sultan's brother, and his men since a series of deadly clashes that started in Sabah last March 1. Azzimudie is the leader of a group of armed Filipinos that had engaged Malaysian forces in the standoff and recent armed clashes. The police said more than 50 people had been detained to date for having links with the armed group, the report said. While the sultan had offered a unilateral ceasefire last Thursday, Malaysia has rejected it and reiterated its call for Kiram's followers to lay down their arms without conditions. Missing The Star online quoted local residents as saying the brother placed on the wanted list had moved to Semporna from Lahad Datu recently. Read More / Baca Lagi >> |
Is payment to Kirams for rental or transfer of Sabah? Posted: 08 Mar 2013 07:44 PM PST Malaysian forces continue hunt for armed Kiram followers. Malaysian soldiers move into Kampung Tanduo where troops stormed the camp of an armed Filipino group in Lahad Datu, Sabah, in this photo taken Tuesday, March 5. Malaysian security forces found 13 bodies of suspected Filipino gunmen as they expanded their hunt for the elusive armed group on Wednesday, a day after an assault with fighter jets, mortars, and hundreds of troops. Reuters/Malaysia Defense Ministry "The 1878 agreement between Alfred Dent and Baron von Overbeck of the British North Borneo Company and the Sultan of Sulu at that time stated that the Sultan of Sulu ceded the region of North Borneo permanently, and the heir is entitled to receive annual payment of 5,300 Mexican Pesos. It is not payment for rent, but as cession," Malaysian Foreign Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman was quoted as saying by a New Straits Times report on Friday. During the 15th century, the Islamic Sultanate of Brunei was nominally in control of Borneo, including Sabah and Sarawak states of Malaysia, and some parts of the Sulu islands in the Philippines. [See timeline here.] But in 1658, the Sultan of Brunei awarded the northeast of Borneo (Sabah), including Palawan, to the Sultan of Sulu in compensation for his help in settling the civil war in his sultanate. In 1878, Sultan Jamalul Alam supposedly leased Sabah to the North Borneo Chartered Company of Baron Gustavos von Overbeck and Alfred Dent. The chartered company eventually turned over the rights over Sabah to the British crown through an agreement in 1946. |

Kiram clan wants death toll proven, insists only 10 soldiers dead Posted: 08 Mar 2013 07:13 PM PST Idjirani said the family wants Malaysia to permit foreign journalists, including those from the Philippines, to enter the conflict zone in Lahad Datu, Sabah, to confirm the Sulu death toll. "You must allow the foreign and local media into the conflict areas to verify their claims. Until that is done, everything is subject to debate," he was quoted in The Philippine Star as saying yesterday. Idjirani, who was speaking on behalf of self-proclaimed Sulu Sultan Jamalul Kiram III, said information received from Jamalul's brother Agbimuddin Kiram confirmed that only 10 of the "royal" Sulu army have been killed since Malaysia launched attacks last Friday. In an ABN-CBS News broadcast yesterday, Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) spokesman Raul Hernandez said the government was still trying to verify the number of Filipino casualties in Sabah, saying they could only rely on information offered to them by the Malaysian authorities. Agbimuddin, the self-proclaimed crown prince of the Sulu Sultanate, is leading the band of over 200 rebels in the east Malaysian state of Sabah, where the group have been holed-up since February 9. The armed men faced their first clash with Malaysian security forces last Friday, after weeks of peaceful negotiations failed, and subsequent skirmishes over the weekend reportedly saw many Sulu gunmen felled, as well as eight Malaysian policemen. Malaysia launched an all-out assault on Tuesday morning, including an aerial attack that saw bombs and heavy artillery fire rained down on the now-beleaguered Kampung Tanduo where the men were hiding. As of Thursday, Malaysian authorities placed the Sulu death toll at 52, with 32 killed during ground skirmishes following Tuesday's aerial assault. Read More / Baca Lagi >> |

People’s hope: Pakatan’s manifesto Posted: 08 Mar 2013 06:49 PM PST The manifesto will be financed from money saved by curbing corruption, money saved by plugging wastage and leakages, thrifty-spending and priority-spending. The statement of former prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad that Pakatan's People's Manifesto will bankrupt the nation was labelled as a "photocopied statement" by PAS vice-president and Pokok Sena MP, Mahfuz Omar, who is of the view that BN leaders always sing the same old tune about Pakatan's budget or manifesto. PAS Kuala Selangor MP, Dzulkefly Ahmad, as a member of the manifesto committee, has thrown a challenge to BN to send its representative to debate with Pakatan leaders over each and every point in the manifesto which is divided into several key sections as outlined below: A. Points for the people's economy: 1. To introduce a holistic programme to ensure that one million jobs will be made available in the agricultural, construction and service sectors and to decrease the number of foreign workers by one million in stages in the space of five years. 2. Implement a minimum wage of RM1,100 per month in line with the principle that every worker should be paid sufficiently as gainful employment to commensurate with the current cost of living so that he will not be living below the poverty line. On the cusp of GE13: Anwar urges M'sians to embrace "new realities", tells Dr M to SHUT UP Posted: 08 Mar 2013 06:45 PM PST "In the past 6 months I have traveled all around the country and I have seen this developing. How do you explain this phenomenon. Do you think this is because of Anwar or because of Guan Eng or because of Ustaz Hadi or because of DAP or Keadilan or PAS," Anwar told a wildly-cheering crowd of more than 50,000 people on Friday night. "This is beyond that. This is the people's awakening, you demand change. This comes from the people who want change. And this must be understood by the government. And also by us. We must honor this commitment. It is not a matter of replacing the prime minister or ministers or the government but to honor the commitment to return the dignity to the Malays, the Chinese, Indians, Dayaks and Kadazans... to give them back their rights and dignity as citizens of this beloved country." Regime change: More than just replacing the PM or govt He was speaking at a ceramah or political rally to commemorate the 5th anniversary of the landmark March 8, 2008 election day that saw the Opposition sweep to unprecedented prominence in Malaysia. In that 12th general election, the PR had won control of 5 out of 13 states and more than half the popular vote. In the coming 13th election widely expected to called within weeks, Anwar expects to win the federal government with a minimum 10-seat victory over Prime Minister Najib Razak's Umno-BN coalition. The 64-year-old Anwar ran through a whole range of issues in his speech, focusing on corruption, injustice and human rights.
