When travelling with electronics?

Posted: 18 May 2012 06:18 AM PDT

In a couple months, I will be going to Italy and Greece for a couple weeks. I'll be travelling with my iPod and camera, and I was wondering what converter type things I'll need to buy that will work there.

Answer on When travelling with electronics?

On any electronics that you want to take along, look at the charging cable and there will be an indication on it - sometimes a silver sticker - that will have details about the electrical capacities of the device. You will see something like "110-240v", which indicates the voltage range that you will be using. North America uses 120v, whereas Europe uses 220v. As long as the device says that it covers the 220v range, it will be fine to use on the European system. Nearly all modern electronics from the past couple of years will work with either 120v or 220v, but certainly check first to be sure.

The only problem will be that you would require an adapter plug to fit into the European sockets. The continental European plugs have just two round prongs to them. You can purchase an adapter for just a few dollars at any travel shop or a store that sells luggage.

In the event that you have an electrical device that does not work on 220v, you can purchase a power adapter to convert the 220v to 120v. The only concern is not to use these with high-wattage devices like hair dryers and curling irons as it will cause the adapter to heat up to the point of being a fire hazard. There are some high-wattage adapters out there, but they are expensive and it's just easier to purchase a new hair dryer that will work in Europe. The two devices you have mentioned (iPod and camera) will be low wattage and likely will work fine on 220v - just check to be sure.
