Sultan Kiram III declares unilateral ceasefire in Sabah Posted: 06 Mar 2013 09:21 PM PST At a press conference in Taguig City on Thursday, Sulu Sultan Jamalul Kiram III (center) gets teary-eyed as he thanked the United Nations and the media for their support. Negotiate to end the Sabah dispute Posted: 06 Mar 2013 09:20 PM PST Is "Money, money, money," as the popular 1976 hit song by Abba goes, the solution to the Sabah standoff? Sultan of Sulu Jamalul Kiram III's claim for Sabah is nothing new. Every once in while it will crop up when relations are strained with Philippines or when the sultan is unhappy and needs compensation (money) or land as a settlement to his claim over Sabah. Behind the scenes, diplomats of both countries have been burning the midnight lamp trying to work out a speedy solution to the Feb 9 Sulu intrusion into Sabah. All kinds of rumours are circulating, one that money was paid to the Sulu sultan for a settlement, but it was pocketed by some top notch middleman. No one can confirm that a payment was made. But, yes the sultanate was offered millions of ringgit during the Ramos regime. Award-winning columnist of the Philippines, Glenda M Gloria, states in an article: "The Sultanate of Sulu has always been open to a settlement. But the squabbling heirs couldn't agree on how to do it. Under Cory Aquino (right), top-level sources told us before, Malaysia offered the Sultanate at least US$70 million (RM217 million) as settlement. "But a politician who claimed to be one of the heirs protested, scuttling the talks. Under Ramos, Malaysia asked Philippine officials to persuade the heirs to accept the setting up of a 'generously funded' foundation that will assist Muslim communities in Mindanao, according to the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) governor Parouk Hussin. However, no agreement was ever reached." The proprietary claims over Sabah date back to Jan 23, 1878, and even earlier, as the then ruler of Sulu, Sultan Jamalul Alam II, leased Sabah (then known as North Borneo) to Gustavus Von Overbeck for an annual rent equivalent to RM5,000 through Von Overbeck's trading partner Alfred Dent. This amount of money is, until today, being paid to the heirs of the Sulu sultan by the Malaysian Embassy in the Philippines. Read More / Baca Lagi >> |
Sulu sultan calls for 'unilateral ceasefire' Posted: 06 Mar 2013 09:14 PM PST MANILA, Philippines - Sulu sultan Jamalul Kiram III has called for a unilateral ceasefire in Lahad Datu, Sabah, following the deaths of several of his followers in a Malaysian military assault. Even as Kiram called on forces loyal to him to stand down, he expressed hope Malaysia would also declare a ceasefire to prevent the further loss of lives. The Sulu sultanate has so far counted 10 of its people dead and four injured from the assault by a combined Malaysian police-military force on Tuesday and Wednesday, with 10 others being held by the Malaysian security forces, said spokesman Abraham Idjirani. Idjirani said despite the Sultan's unilateral ceasefire declaration issued Thursday, their fighters will continue to maintain a defensive stance, and urged Malaysia to declare a ceasefire. The ceasefire was declared to prevent further bloodshed in Lahad Datu. The declaration came as Malaysia launched another assault in the area on Thursday morning. Sulu Sultan Jamalul Kiram III also welcomed the pronouncement of UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon calling for an end to the violence and a dialogue on Sabah. Sulu Sultan's wife deplores exhumations at Lahad Datu, scoffs at extradition notion Posted: 06 Mar 2013 09:12 PM PST "It is unfortunate because it is against Islam," Dr. Fatima Kiram said of the exhumations. "'Pag namatay ang isang Muslim, kailangan itong ilibing kaagad. Eh, ang ginawa nila, hinukay nila ulit at pinakunan ang 10 bangkay (When a Muslim dies, he is supposed to be buried immediately. What they did, they dug up the 10 bodies and took photographs)." Kiram's spokesman Abraham Idjirani said in a press conference in Taguig City that the unilateral ceasefire was declared by the Sultan at 12:30 p.m. Thursday. ‘Mahathir’s sins, Najib’s lies’ Posted: 06 Mar 2013 09:09 PM PST Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's 'unhelpful' comments on the crisis has led many to believe that he is still calling the shots in the government. KUCHING: Sabahans are paying the price for the 'sins' committed by the government whilst under former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, claimed Sarawak PKR.Referring to the infamous Mahathir-led Project IC which legalised tens and thousands of illegal Muslim Filipinos, Indonesians and others in the 1990s, state chief Baru Bian said that Mahathir's only concern was in establishing a loyal 'votes' bank and neutralising Sabah's then majority Christian population. These "voters" have been Barisan Nasional's fixed deposits in the past and ensured Umno won elections and that federal styled Islamic administration was administered in Sabah. "Now we are paying the price of the sins of the government under Mahathir. Unfortunately, the people of Sabah are the ones paying for Mahathir's sins. "Without the 'Project IC', these invaders would not have found it so easy to infiltrate and blend into the local population, and they certainly would not have ready sympathisers willing to help them," Bian told reporters here yesterday. He was commenting on the actions against the armed invaders. "Perhaps the authorities were reluctant to take action because of the possibility of a backlash from the illegal IC community on Sabah. |
LAHAD DATU OVERKILL: Umno-BN's final debacle Posted: 06 Mar 2013 09:07 PM PST We do not need rocket science to ensure that our sovereignty is intact especially from intruders like the ones who 'dropped by' in Sabah. No doubt they were armed but they were still a rag-tag rather unkempt bunch compared to our armed forces. But UMNO ministers are either "kelam-kabut" (headless chicken mode) or couldn't care less. Remember the tsunami threat last year when the various bodies and authorities issued irrelevant and conflicting instructions and information. It was just fortunate that the tsunami fizzled out before coming anywhere near to us but that is in hindsight. The point is none of the ministers came forward to give assurance, guidance or to lead the people. We were left to our own perils while they were too busy attending the opening of the new National Palace, eating and drinking the best that money could buy while we worried and fretted. Why couldn't even one of the senior ministers take charge? Lack of intelligence: Sitting duck for intruders There must be an effort to make sure that we do not have real enemies capable of armed incursions. This could be achieved by having reliable and proactive intelligence that can pre-empt any such moves. After establishing a reliable intelligence network, our authorities must act to nullify the threat, pacify or delay the efforts of our opponents so that we can move ourselves into a position of strength. In getting ready, the logistics, communications and central command are crucial, thus the first line of defense must be in place along the shores of Sabah both on land and offshore. This would entail having enough security personnel, patrol boats and naval vessels. Therefore the two extremely expensive but non-useful Scorpene submarines bought by our government are a waste of money. Overpriced naval vessels produced in the Boustead Naval Shipyard that don't really conform to specifications won't work either. As such, when none of the above was in place, it was easy for foreign intruders to invade our shores, even such a ragtag group as the Lahad Datu 200. We not only left our front door open but even gave the key to the thieves, so to speak. Political interference |
Kiram clan only out for bigger payday, Manila paper reports Posted: 06 Mar 2013 09:07 PM PST KUALA LUMPUR, March 7 ― The Kiram clan had not intended to reclaim Sabah but wanted more money than the current RM5,500 in annual stipend paid to the Sulu Sultanate, arguing that the sum was not "even enough to pay rental for an apartment" in Manila, the Philippines Star reported today. Quoting Acting Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) Government Mujiv Hataman, the newspaper said the message was relayed by "Princess" Jacel, the oldest daughter of self-styled Sulu "Sultan" Jamalul Kiram III, in one of the backroom negotiations between the clan and Manila for a peaceful solution to the Lahad Datu standoff. "Hataman also emphasized that Princess Jacel told them they did not have plans to reclaim Sabah, and that they were only asking for a bigger payment because the current rate was not even enough to pay rental for an apartment," the report said. Malaysia paid the sultanate RM5,500 annually for Sabah, which it considered part of ancestral lands first ceded to the North Borneo Company in the 19th century. The honorarium and ownership over the state was reported to be among the three issues raised by the sultanate with the Aquino administration before the Sabah standoff, which has left more than 30 dead, developed last month. Najib PM pertama gagal pertahan keselamatan rakyat & negara Posted: 06 Mar 2013 09:04 PM PST KUALA LUMPUR 7 MAC: Pencerobohan di Lahad Datu, Sabah bukti Najib Razak Perdana Menteri pertama gagal mempertahan keselamatan rakyat dan negara, kata Pengarah Strategi KEADILAN, Rafizi Ramli. Katanya, kegagalan Najib memastikan keselamatan rakyat terjamin apabila kes jenayah semakin meningkat menunjukkan kelemahan pentadbiran kerajaan. Read More / Baca Lagi >> |
Sulu ‘Sultan’ says ‘royal army’ incommunicado Posted: 06 Mar 2013 09:02 PM PST KUALA LUMPUR, March 7 ― Filipino militant leader Agbimuddin Kiram has not called home in 24 hours, his brother and self-styled Sulu Sultan Jamalul Kiram III said this morning, even as Malaysian fighter jets again roared over Sabah in search of the Sulu rebels. Philippine TV network ABN-CBS News Channel said in its morning news broadcast that the beleaguered Kiram clan was increasingly worried over the safety of their "royal army" in Lahad Datu, where Malaysia's security forces are swarming over, by foot and by air, in an operation to flush out the militant group. "According to Sultan Jamalul Kiram, until now, he is yet to get updates from Datuk Raja Muda Kiram who is in Sabah. "The Sultan said it is more difficult to communicate with the royal security forces now that they are scattered," network reporter Jerome Lantin said in the 8am broadcast. The reporter said that in the latest update to the Kiram family, who reside in Taguig City, Philippines, an estimated 40 soldiers from their "royal army" have already fallen since gunfire broke out last weekend. Lahad Datu: The real sovereign (Opinion) Posted: 06 Mar 2013 09:02 PM PST By Randy DavidWe should be wary of talking about North Borneo or Sabah as if it were just a piece of real estate without inhabitants. There are people there who regard themselves as natives to the place, and identify themselves as Sabahans. They are descended from the various ethnic groups and races that over the centuries had settled and developed the place. On Aug. 31, 1963, the Sabahans declared their own separate independence from the British. Later, they joined the newly formed, independent Federation of Malaysia, spelling out the terms of their integration in a "20-point Agreement" that stressed their autonomy. Their relationship with the central government in Kuala Lumpur has not always been smooth. But, whatever their differences might have been, they never saw themselves as in any manner allied to the Philippines. It would be instructive to take a look at two of Sabah's leaders at the time of independence. Tun Mustapha, known to many as the leader of Sabah's independence, was a member of the Suluk-Bajau tribe and was believed to be a distant relation of the Sultan of Sulu. He became the first governor of Sabah under the new Malaysian federation in whose formation he played a crucial role. Donald Stephens, a leader of the Kadazandusun community, became the first chief minister of Sabah under the federation of Malaysia. His father was half-Kadazan and half-British, while his mother was half-British and half-Japanese. He grew up a Roman Catholic, converting to Islam later in life. There were others, representing the Chinese community, who negotiated the integration of an autonomous Sabah into Malaysia. Read More / Baca Lagi >> |

"Beliau menggesa semua pihak menyediakan ruang bagi bantuan kemanusiaan dan bertindak mengikut norma dan standard antarabangsa," kata jurucakapnya dalam satu kenyataan dikeluarkan di New York, semalam. Ini kali pertama PBB mengeluarkan kenyataan berhubung insiden di Sabah yang berlarutan hampir sebulan. Bernama report ‘OUT OF CONTEXT’ - Philippines Posted: 06 Mar 2013 07:30 PM PST PETALING JAYA - The Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has denied a Bernama report that Manila and Kuala Lumpur have agreed to label the self-proclaimed Sulu Royal Army troop as "terrorists". The Philippine news portal ABS-CBN News reported today that Foreign Secretary Albert del Rosario had only concurred in describing the killings as "terroristic acts". Bernama had on Tuesday quoted Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman as saying: "Secretary Rosario agreed that this group should be labelled as terrorists". Anifah had met with del Rosario on Monday night, just hours before Malaysian armed forces launched a full-scale attack against supporters of Sulu "sultan" Jamalul Kiram III holed up in Kg Tanduo, Lahad Datu. "According to Philippine Ambassador Eduardo Malaya, who was present at the meeting (with Anifah), the (Bernama) report is out of context," the DFA said in a statement emailed to ABS-CBN News. "In Semporna, there were alleged acts of terrorism. As reported by the Malaysian foreign minister, after the police forces were lured into an ambush and killed, their bodies were mutilated and desecrated," the DFA statement reads. "If indeed these atrocities were committed, the secretary and the foreign minister both agreed that these were, at the very least, terroristic acts." The DFA reported on its official website that del Rosario was also tasked by President Benigno Aquino to explore "acceptable" avenues to end the standoff. |
Posted: 06 Mar 2013 07:29 PM PST While its politically convenient to keep Malaysians uninformed, its led to widespread rumours and fears over the real situation gripping Sabah. The phenomenon of thousands of rumours circulating around Sabah about armed men spotted, bomb blasts and shootouts at various places in the state can be attributed to general doubt over the real situation. The biggest beneficiaries due to the dearth of official information are the telcos. There has unquestioningly been an uptick in SMSes and MMSes as the military and police operation entered its fourth week yesterday. The police have been dispelling most claims as wild rumours and have assured people that they have the situation under control. But that's easier said than done in this case. It's a scathing assessment of news dissemination or lack of it that rumours are needed to fill the vacuum. "At the moment anything, from someone accidentally tripping and falling to a bushfire raging is being blamed on what's happening on the east coast," said a veteran journalist now retired who requested he not be named. Commenting on a rumour that three armed men had been arrested after a shootout on Labuan island off the west coast of Sabah, he said the failure by television channels to provide a live coverage of the crisis "They are instead carrying on as if nothing had happened. People are worried so that is why they are hunting around to find out what's happening. "People are genuinely scared and when there is no official news provided like a live coverage then they are of course listen to when someone says they heard someone else saying something about what they heard … that's the nature of people," he said. Malaysian TV stations are still sticking to their normal schedule and only updating viewers on on-going events on the Sabah east coast during the scheduled news broadcasts. |
Posted: 06 Mar 2013 07:28 PM PST Lives have been lost in Lahad Datu all because the prime minister failed to uphold his responsibility of keeping the country and its people safe and secure. This knee-jerk reaction from Najib Tun Razak in an attempt to do some damage-control has not appeased the rakyat; it has instead raised their hackles. The Lahad Datu drama has raised a host of questions, all of which point to the federal government's failure in averting bloodshed. More precisely, the Lahad Datu debacle has revealed that Najib lacks perspicacity in preventing a crisis and this is a major cause for concern for the country and her people. On March 1, armed intruders from the so-called Sulu army fired at policemen on duty in Lahad Datu, killing two of them and another six officers in Semporna the following day. Najib was reported to have said that following the armed intrusion in Lahad Datu on Feb 12, the government adopted the approach of resolving the issue without bloodshed. The unwise call by Najib today holds him accountable for the deaths of the eight policemen. Had Barisan Nasional leaders been "on their toes" instead of prancing about for public sympathy and votes to secure a win in the general election, the Lahad Datu tragedy could have been avoided. It is baffling that Najib decided to take a soft approach to the intrusion when the intruders themselves came armed to kill. BN lacked guts Read More / Baca Lagi >> |

Read More / Baca Lagi >> |
