The Goverment Is No Longer In Control Posted: 09 Mar 2011 12:50 AM PST RAZ: Just 30 miles west of Libya's capital, Tripoli, in the town of Zawiyah, the government is no longer in control. Colonel Moammar Gadhafi's stronghold of Tripoli is increasingly surrounded by anti-government forces. And in the country's second largest city, Benghazi, opposition leaders have formed what they're calling a national council, something, they say, to give a political face to the revolution. One of those leaders is the former justice minister under Gadhafi, Mustafa Abdel-Jalil. He spoke to Al-Jazeera earlier today. Mr. MUSTAFA ABDEL-JALIL (Former Justice Minister, Libya): (Through translator) What is happening in Libya is a popular revolution led by the youth, supported by the people, against oppression and against a dictator who has led Libya with a singular point of view and with a vengeful attitude and bloodthirsty soul. Now we announce to the world that we intend to build a democratic nation with institutions that respect international obligations and treaties. RAZ: Earlier today, Gadhafi's son and heir apparent Saif al-Islam al-Gadhafi told ABC News that reports of chaos and violence are false. Mr. SAIF AL-ISLAM AL-GADHAFI: You are hearing rumors, false reports. Please, take your camera tomorrow morning, even (unintelligible). Everything is calm. Everything is peaceful. RAZ: Now, most news accounts contradict that optimism. The U.N. Security Council slapped sanctions on Libya last night and referred the country's leadership to the International Criminal Court for possible war crimes violations. Here's what the U.S. ambassador to the U.N., Susan Rice, had to say. Ms. SUSAN RICE (United States Ambassador to the United Nations): This is a clear warning to the Libyan government that it must stop the killing. Those who slaughter civilians will be held personally accountable. RAZ: Now, remember when those WikiLeaks cables were released last November? Well, one of those documents, written by a U.S. diplomat, described a, quote, "voluptuous blonde nurse," a Ukrainian national, who is always at Gadhafi's side. Her name is Galyna Kolotnytska. She's thought to be a close Gadhafi confidante. Well, this morning, she, too, fled the country and arrived to the Ukrainian capital Kiev. |
Posted: 08 Mar 2011 08:26 PM PST 1. Was I rewriting history when I said that Peninsular Malaysia is historically Semenanjung Tanah Melayu? If Mr Gan Ping Sieu
(MCA Vice President) cares to read the history of this peninsular, he would know that officially the Malayan Union was replaced by Persekutuan Tanah Melayu. The English name "Federation of Malaya" was not official. I ought to know because I lived through this period. 2. But when the federation was enlarged to include Singapore, Sabah and Sarawak, the Malays, led by the Tunku agreed to the name "Malaysia" for the enlarged federation. Historically therefore the Malays agreed to the renaming of Persekutuan Tanah Melayu. But historically the peninsular was Tanah Melayu, made up of Malay States ruled by their rulers, the Malay Sultans. All agreements with the British were made by the Malay Sultans of the Malay States of the Peninsular. Malaya or Malaysia never entered into agreements with the British simply because they did not exist as sovereign states. 3. These are the facts of history. I was speaking about the origins of Malaysia. Can we say the origin of Malaysia was Malaysia. Historically there was no Malaysia. |
RAKYAT KENA TENGOK WAKIL MEREKA Posted: 08 Mar 2011 07:52 PM PST APA WAKIL RAKYAT ANDA BUAT DI PARLIMEN ? Melihat2 hujah2 YB Saifuddin petang tadi (Yb ni memang tak menghampakan kalau berhujah) UBN memang terkedu. Tapi YB Ibrahim Ali pun bagus juga berhujah tapi dia ikut stail mahathir. YB ni yg selalu buat kenyataan perkauman tapi bila berhujah dia marahkan orang yang bersifat perkauman. |

"If he left Libya immediately, within 72 hours, and stop the bombing, we as a people of Libya would not prosecute him," said Mustafa Abdel Jalil, a former justice minister, told Al Jazeera station at 9.30 last night (Malaysian time). He said 72 hours would not be extended. The council is now based in Benghazi which is in control of the rebel factions. - Reuters |
Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail |
Posted: 08 Mar 2011 05:57 PM PST TRIPOLI, Libya – After dramatic successes over the past weeks, Libya's rebel movement appears to have hit a wall of overwhelming power from loyalists of Moammar Gadhafi. Pro-regime forces halted their drive on Tripoli with a heavy barrage of rockets in the east and threatened Tuesday to recapture the closest rebel-held city to the capital in the west. If Zawiya, on Tripoli's doorstep, is ultimately retaken, the contours of a stalemate would emerge — with Libya divided between a largely loyalist west and a rebel east as the world wrestles with the thorny question of how deeply to intervene. President Barack Obama and British Prime Minister David Cameron agreed to plan for the "full spectrum of possible responses" on Libya, including imposing a no-fly zone to prevent Gadhafi's warplanes from striking rebels. According to a White House statement, the two leaders spoke Tuesday and agreed that the objective must be an end to violence and the departure of Gadhafi "as quickly as possible." A spokesman for the opposition's newly created Interim Governing Council in Benghazi, meanwhile, said a man who claimed to represent Gadhafi made contact with the council to discuss terms for the leader of four decades to step down. Mustafa Gheriani told The Associated Press the council could not be certain whether the man was acting on his own initiative or did in fact represent Gadhafi. "But our position is clear: No negotiations with the Gadhafi regime," said Gheriani, who declined to say when contact was made or reveal the identity of the purported envoy. Libyan state television denied that Gadhafi had sent an envoy to talk to the rebels. In London, British Foreign Secretary William Hague said that neither Gadhafi nor rebel forces appeared currently able to establish supremacy. "At the moment ... it seems that either side lacks the immediate power to overthrow the other," he said. Later Tuesday, Gadhafi made a surprise appearance at a hotel hosting foreign correspondents in Tripoli, arriving just before midnight. He raised his fist in the air as he walked from his car to the hotel, then he went into a room separated by curtains for exclusive interviews with a Turkish and a French television station. |
