Posted: 26 Oct 2010 07:37 AM PDT The Malaysian Insider reported HERE that Auditor-General Tan Sri Ambrin Buang has noted a positive change in the form of more prudent and transparent spending by government departments and agencies.He admitted that there had been flaws in government spending before this, resulting in wastage of publc funds. Nonetheless, we still have a long way to go to correct leakages, excesses, transparency, accountability and apathy. When Barack Obama became President, he issued his Transparency and Open Government Memorandum for the Heads of Executive Departments and Agencies which in no uncertain terms, defined what he expected of the officials. Will such a memorandum continue to be a mere pipe dream in Malaysia? Will we EVER have transparency and efficiency remain meaningless words? Will we continue to see our hard-earned tax payments go down the drain or will they flow elsewhere? Citizens want transparency in EVERY aspect of governance! A government that is not transparent is prone to corruption because there is no public scrutiny of decision making. Big Brother must restore our confidence in public institutions by practising transparency, increasing efficiency to ensure that tax revenue is used to fund all the right things. At the end of the day, it is the rakyat that matters! No two ways about it! Will Big Brother do anything here or will the rakyat's $$$$ continue to clean the gutters? What do the rest of the rakyat want today? The majority of us may support such broad social goals such as affordable cost of living, decent wages for working people, safe working conditions, a secure retirement, and clean air and water, but there is no government "of, by, and for the people" to deliver on those aspirations, is there? So for once, please listen to the Auditor-General's Report and DO SOMETHING CONSTRUCTIVE!!! Don't let it be just another file on the shelf. Always, RAKYAT ABOVE ALL ELSE!!!
