KUALA LUMPUR - Tongues are wagging. The continued absence of ex-Selangor strongman Muhamammad Muhd Taib from Umno activities, especially his own Kelana Jaya division, is feeding the rumour mill.

Muhammad, better known as Mat Taib or "Mat Tyson", was Selangor menteri besar from 1986 to 1997 and was rural and regional development minister from March 2008 to April 2009.

The former Umno vice-president, former Selangor Umno Liaison Committee chairman and former party information chief, is claimed to be inactive in politics since losing the contest for the party deputy president post in March 2009.

Political observers are looking at an Umno power struggle as recent events at some Umno divisions indicate that there is infighting among the members.

Also, trouble was seen as brewing last Friday in Terengganu where four elected representatives from the Setiu constintuency did not attend the Umno division's delegates meeting. They have been chided for not giving priority to party matters.

Referring to Mat Taib, party supreme council member Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi Sunday said as a leader who once held high positions in Umno and the Selangor and federal governments, Muhammad should set a good example for other party members to follow, Bernama reported.

Lack of commitment

He said Muhammad's reported absence twice from the divisions's meetings and failure to attend any of the state Umno liaison meetings chaired by party president Najib Tun Razak showed his lack of commitment to party work and fulfilling his responsibilities.

"He has shown a bad example as an leader with a lot of experience, as he seems to have no interest in the division which he leads, whether in attending its meetings or carrying out activities," Mohd Puad told Bernama.

Mohd Puad who is also Deputy Education Minister, said Muhammad who was Hulu Selangor Umno division chief from 1982 to 1998, was also reported to have not given his cooperation during the Hulu Selangor by-election campaign recently.

"Don't be extreme over a little disappointment and acting worse than those without any position, but must always be committed to the party's struggles instead," Mohd Puad added.

Mohd Puad said he would bring this issue to the attention of the Umno supreme council soonest possible for a solution.

He said the supreme council should not allow the situation to prolong and a decision should be made fast on Muhammad's position as the Kelana Jaya division chief for the good of all.

Negative picture

"It is up to the party's Management Committee to decide, but there must be an immediate solution, what more with Umno and the Barisan Nasional being the opposition in Selangor now," he said.

On the Terengganu issue, Umno Supreme Council member Ahmad Shabery Cheek said the four representatives should sit together to resolve matters arising instead of taking action that eventually gave a negative picture on the state Umno.

Expressing shock and disappointment at the incident, he said their action gave the impression that they were not placing importance to the party because the meeting was opened by Umno deputy president Muhyiddin Yassin.

He disclosed this to Bernama at a gathering of the people with the leader at the grassroots level for the Kemaman Umno division here Saturday.

Ahmad Shabery, who is also the Youth and Sports Minister, said this when asked to comment of the absence of the four assemblymen, Ramlan Ali (Jabi), Abd Halim Jusoh (Permaisuri), Asha'ari Idris (Langkap), and Khazan Che Mat (Batu Rakit) at the delegates meeting. - MM
