We did not agree, says Kg Baru council

By Yow Hong Chieh
June 16, 2010

KUALA LUMPUR, June 16 — The administrative body in charge of Kampung Baru has refuted the Federal Territories Minister's claim that owners and beneficiaries of the area agreed to the government's redevelopment plans.

"We did not agree," said Mashuti Mat Soom, acting deputy chairman for the Kampung Baru Malay Agricultural Settlement Administrative Board (MAS).

Federal Territories Minister Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin said on Monday that Kampung Baru residents had agreed to the ministry's proposal and that they were now speaking with "one voice".

The minister had met with MAS and Kampung Baru owners and beneficiaries over three hours on Monday to iron out the details of the redevelopment plan.

MAS, which has been acting as local council for the settlement since its inception 110 years ago, called Raja Nong Chik's statement "confusing".

"Many residents called asking us when MAS had agreed to the proposal," Mashuti said.

He was diplomatic when asked if Raja Nong Chik's statement was true.

"That depends on who's doing the talking. If the minister thinks it's true, that's up to him," he said.

He stressed that it was not possible for the government to go ahead with its plans if MAS does not first give it the green light.

"MAS and the residents go hand-in-glove. We are one," he said.

"If MAS says no, then most likely the residents will say no too. So how are they going to implement it?"

MAS honorary secretary Shamsuri Suradi said that one of the points raised during Monday's meeting was MAS's role under the government's proposed Kampung Baru Development Corporation (PPKB), which would be responsible for implementing and supervising redevelopment.

He had suggested to the ministry that it use MAS as a shell body to administer the redevelopment instead.

"It's better for us to develop our own village than to leave it to an outsider who isn't aware of our issues," he said.

"This is our village. They (outsiders) will do the planning without referring to the landowners. We don't want that."

He conceded that it was the government's right to use the Land Acquisition Act 1960 to take the land by force, but added that authorities knew what the "implications" of such a move would be.

Section 3(1)(b) of the act allows the state authority to acquire any land which "is needed by any person or corporation for any purpose which in the opinion of the State Authority is beneficial to the economic development of Malaysia or any part thereof or to the public generally or any class of the public".

However, Shamsuri emphasised that MAS and Kampung Baru residents were not against development but rather the form it takes under the current proposal.

He added that "worst come to worst" MAS will conduct a house-to-house referendum to determine support for the government's plans.

Seisi bumi dan langit Kelantan tolak Najib...

YB Datuk Husam Musa menulis....

Termasuk solat hajat royalti minyak.

Mengenepikan tuan rumah - tentulah bukan langkah bijak.

Sesetengah berkata, 'UMNO tetap UMNO...'.

Ada peluang, mereka mencengkam. Taring UMNO mereka sentiasa tersedia. Berita penuh di sini...

Kesian Melayu...Najib Tipu Melayu Lagi!!

10MP- Conspiracy of the Rich.

Thus we have 52 high impact projects worth RM63, 000,000,000. That's 63 thousand million. We shall see who gets to build the 7 highways worth RM19, 000,000,000. We are also building 2 coal fired electricity plants worth RM 7,000,000,000. Will that be furthering the cause of green technology?

Sungai Buloh land will be developed jointly by EPF and its partners for RM10,000,000,000. I have written about the development of the Sungai Besi Air Force Base . It will be led by the 1MDB- nee Terengganu Sovereign Fund. It will be advised by that splendid young man Taek Jho Low and his Qatari friends. Who knows at the launching of the project we shall be entertained by the likes of Usher, J.Lo and Rihana. Let's see whether they will develop this properly directly or they will do what privileged business people do- flip deals by selling the package to another party.

RM18,000,000,000 will be spent on 2 aluminum smelting plants, absorbing the excess electricity generated by the Bakun Dam. PETRONAS will construct LNG regassification plant for RM 3,000,000,000. We shall watch closely who PETRONAS appoints as its contractors.

Of course the government will subsidise the financing of these projects. It has created a financing vehicle to help spend RM 20,000,000,000. This isn't termed as subsidy. Subsidies are those expenditures that are not reciprocated by giving value. These companies give value so; the RM 20,000,000,000 is not subsidy. Subsidy is given to lazy people mostly Malays and so must be rescinded. These are those who clamoured for affirmative action policies but who didn't become market friendly.

But this RM20,000 million is expected to generate 200,000 million. That's value. Hence we can justify dishing out that amount at low interest rates.

Subsides are given to people who will bankrupt the country. Because the recipients are mostly Malays, this means the people responsible for bankrupting this nation are Malays. If we dig deeper, we shall discover that the particular Malays who bankrupt this nation are probably the ULM- UMNO linked Malays who are also the most prominent rent seekers led of course by Malay royalties, and the puteras in the bumi.

How much did we lose in the PKFZ project? RM 12,000,000,000? Well some portion from this 20,000 million will be used to finance a land reclamation project in Westport the same black hole that sucked in tons of money for which no one was accountable for. It's a financial ghost-town which the government wants to exorcise.

Michelle Yeoh will be singing praises hearing that some of this cheap money will go to the construction of a Truly Asia Centre. Malaysia- Truly Asia. Why do we need to finance a project in Iskandar Malaysia when IM has already got lots of funds? Has the Corridor been breached?

Siapa Datin Cindy????

KUALA LUMPUR: An opposition leader has taken Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak to task over the proposed relocation of the Sungai Besi air force base in lieu of a development project there.

PKR vice-president Azmin Ali also suggested that in its desperation to revive the economy, Najib's administration was willing to compromise the nation's security, dignity and sovereignity.

"There is a trend under the new administration to make national assets disappear through the sale of strategic areas to family and cronies," said the Gombak MP when debating the 10th Malaysia Plan (10MP) in Parliament yesterday.

On June 10, Defence Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announced that the Sungai Besi airport will be relocated to make way for the "Greater Kuala Lumpur" development project under the 10MP.

The minister said the plan is still under discussion, and talk is that the new air force base might be housed in Dengkil.

However, Azmin stressed that its current location was vital from a security viewpoint.

"The airport is the only strategic facility in the frontier city. It also houses the Air Force Operations Centre (POTU) which has the integrated air defence radar supplemented by the Malaysia Air Defence Ground Environment (MADGE)," he said.

Azmin explained that MADGE is an integrated satellite system that has real time battle air picture with direct communication with Butterworth, Kuantan and Bukit Ibam.

"It took about 10 years for the military to perfect this system. Can the government guarantee that during the relocation process, the radar system will not be compromised?" he asked.

Azmin also said the cost to relocate the high technology radar system will inflate the national defence budget, which is already shrouded in secrecy.

He also noted that the Sungai Besi aiport is also where mercy flight operations are handled such as in providing relief for victims of tragedies.

Is Bukit Aman and Putrajaya next?

On a sarcastic note, Azmin asked when the government proposed to sell the Ministry of Defence, Bukit Aman and Putrajaya.

The PKR leader also lashed out at the government for not offering an open tender system in selling the 400 acres of land in Sungai Besi.

Prodding further, he said the proposed development project involves two companies, 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) and Malton Bhd.

"1MDB is linked to one Jho Low who is regarded as a 'mystery man who spends a lot of money in New York night clubs' as reported by the New York Post," he added.

Azmin also questioned the role of one "Datin Cindy" in the awarding of this prime land to the two companies.

"I have been told that Datin Cindy is the shopping partner of the this country's top leader's wife," he said, referring to Najib's wife, Rosmah Mansor.

Mahfuz: Too little information

Meanwhile, PAS deputy president Mahfuz Omar echoed Azmin's views in stating that the plan to sacrifice the Sungai Besi air force base for commercial development was both dangerous and against the concept of overall defence.

"The move will cause the country to lose a strategic defence base in the centre of town. TUDM is a key element in national defence and an integral part of the concept of overall defence.

"It is not appropriate to do away with this strategic defence base merely to fulfil the needs of a crony, " said the Pokok Sena MP.

Mahfuz also wanted to know the risks involved in the transfer of highly sensitive and critical Electronic Warfare Support Centre (EWSC) facility when the base is relocated.

"Why is the government pretending not to know about the facility when electronic warfare is crucial and critical to our defence.

He said the shifting of the facilities would take a long time and in the process the country would lose control over its air force operations systems.

He also said the government has given no indication as to where the new air base would be located.

"The defence minister has only announced that the air base will be transferred to another site that will be announced later. He has not said where it will be.

"He has also not disclosed any information on the costs of commissioning, compensation and other indirect expenses. All these payouts will have to be borne by TUDM, the military and the people," he said.

"I just hope the government is not making another blunder like it did with its sale of the Majidee and Ampang transit camps in Penang and its army quarters in Batu Uban. Those decisions left the country without a back-up defence facility," he said.
