| Massive sinkhole swallows city building Posted: 01 Jun 2010 08:55 AM PDT "A giant sinkhole larger than a street intersection has swallowed a three-storey building and a house in Guatemala, as residents reel from a storm that has killed at least 146 people across Central America. In the north of Guatemala City, the giant sinkhole opened up in the wake of Tropical Storm Agatha, reportedly killing a security guard although local officials have not confirmed the death. A similar hole opened up nearby last year and residents blamed the sinkhole on a poor sewage drainage system underground. In towns outside the capital, people caked in dirt searched for their loved ones as the stench of mud and sewage from flooded drains filled the air and emergency workers urged survivors to leave ruined houses and go to shelters. The first-named storm of the 2010 Pacific hurricane season, Agatha hit Guatemala on Saturday, dumping more than one metre of rain in the mountainous west of the country and in neighbouring El Salvador." | Israeli military admits errors in raid approach Posted: 01 Jun 2010 07:36 AM PDT But the Israeli military puts the blame for the deaths on the organisers of the aid flotilla, saying its soldiers were attacked by a lynch mob, some of whom were armed with clubs and knives. Israel's storming of the pro-Palestinian aid ships left nine people dead and sparked an international outcry. The United Nations Security Council met in an emergency session to discuss Israel's role in the incident, with most members of the 15-nation body calling for a thorough investigation. Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has condemned the incident, and more than 1,000 people turned out to rallies across Australia's capital cities on Tuesday to protest against the flotilla attack. Marine commandos involved in the attack pointed to a failure of intelligence." Read more here. |
| Tension Intensifies Between Israel and Turkey ....... Posted: 01 Jun 2010 07:26 AM PDT Today, Egypt temporarily reopened its border to allow the flow of aid to Gaza. Israel and Egypt imposed the blockade in 2007, after Hamas violently seized the Gaza Strip. The Israeli attack on the Turkish ship has further escalated tensions between those two countries. Turkey's prime minister called the flotilla attack a "bloody massacre," and Turkey has withdrawn its ambassador to Israel." Visit here. |
| Posted: 01 Jun 2010 07:08 AM PDT The Palestinian news agency Ma'an reported that the move was an order from Egypt's president, Hosni Mubarak. The move follows an Israeli military raid on Monday on an international convoy of ships carrying aid to Gaza that left at least nine people dead. The Rafah crossing is Gaza's only crossing point not fully controlled by Israel. Egypt has only opened the crossing sporadically since 2007 when Israel imposed a sweeping blockade on Gaza following Hamas' takeover of the territory. Egypt is at odds with Hamas, which is allied with the Egyptian opposition, the Muslim Brotherhood." Visit here. |

| Gaza convoy passengers offloaded at Ashdod; Al Jazeera crew attacked Posted: 31 May 2010 07:44 PM PDT "According to the Israeli daily Haaretz, Israel authorities incarcerated at least 32 of the activists who were aboard the flotilla, at least 16 of them for refusing to identify themselves.Meanwhile, a crew from Al Jazeera reporting live from the port was forced to flee when right-wing Israeli protesters assaulted them. The network's Shireen Tadros said Bureau Chief Walid Al-Omari was "attacked by a mob" at the port, and the crew decided to leave out of concern for its safety." Full report here. |
| Aktivis konvoi Gaza dihantar ke penjara Posted: 31 May 2010 07:05 PM PDT Laman web Haluan Palestin melaporkan, puluhan aktivis lain akan dihantar pulang ke negara asal. Juru bicara polis Israel, Micky Rosenfeld berkata para aktivis dibawa ke darat dan dipenjara di gurun selatan bandar Bersyeba selepas enggan memberikan butir pengenalan diri.
