HANOI 8 Mac - Pesawat Malaysia Airlines (MAS) yang membawa 227 penumpang dan 12 krew dilaporkan terhempas ke dalam laut iaitu 246 kilometer dari luar pantai pulau Tho Chu di Vietnam.

``Buat masa ini, tidak ada bot-bot tentera laut Vietnam di kawasan itu, oleh itu kami meminta bot dari pada pulau Phu Quoc supaya bersedia untuk operasi menyelamat,'' kata Laksamana Ngo Van Phat kepada portal berita Tuoi Tre.

Pulau Tho Chu dan Phu Quoc terletak barat daya di selatan Vietnam.

Missing Malaysia plane found crashing off Vietnam sea: navy official

A Malaysia Airlines plane en route to China that went missing on Saturday morning with 239 people on board was found crashing off Vietnam's southern island, a senior navy official has confirmed.

Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper quoted Rear Admiral Ngo Van Phat, political commissar of the Fifth Naval Region as saying that they detected the ill-fated airplane some 153 nautical miles (300 kilometers) from Tho Chu Island. The island is located 55 nautical miles (102 km) southwest of the famous resort island of Phu Quoc.

The sea water is located between Vietnam and Malaysia.

Phat said Vietnamese officials are ready for a rescue mission once they receive orders from related agencies.

According to Malaysia Airlines' statement, air traffic controllers lost contact with the Boeing B777-200 aircraft (flight MH 370) more than two hours after it departed.

The plane departed Kuala Lumpur at 12:21 a.m. Saturday (1621 GMT Friday) and was scheduled for landing in Beijing at 6:30 a.m. (2230 GMT) the same day.

Chinese news agency Xinhua reported the plane's radar contact was lost when it was in the Vietnamese airspace.

However, Lai Xuan Thanh, head of the Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam, told Thanh Nien that the plane was supposed to be present in Ho Chi Minh City's flight information region (FIR) at 12:21 a.m. Saturday (1721 GMT Friday).

But, at the time Vietnam could not contact with the aircraft, he said.

The airplane was carrying 227 passengers with 14 nationalities and 12 crew members, including 152 Chinese nationals.

UPDATE [2:06pm]: Members of the media have been barred from entering a special holding area for families of passegers and crew of flight MH370 at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport. Meanwhile, politician Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin is being slammed for an insensitive tweet about a 'new Bermuda triangle'.

UPDATE [12:37]: Tuoi Tre, a leading daily in Vietnam, reports that the Vietnamese Navy has confirmed the plane crashed into the ocean. According to Navy Admiral Ngo Van Phat, Commander of the Region 5, military radar recorded that the plane crashed into the sea at a location 153 miles South of Phu Quoc island.

When contacted, Malaysia Airlines declined to confirm or deny the reports, saying that the Malaysian authorities are working together with the Vietnamese government on the matter.

Meanwhile, Al Jazeera reports that China has dispatched two maritime rescue ships to help locate the missing plane.

The flight was piloted by Captain Zaharie Ahmad Shah, a Malaysian aged 53. He has a total flying hours of 18,365 hours.

He joined Malaysia Airlines in 1981. First officer, Fariq Ab.Hamid, a Malaysian, is aged 27. He has a total flying hours of 2,763 hours. He joined Malaysia Airlines in 2007.


UPDATE [11:32am]: VN Express, Vietnam's largest news site, reports that Vietnam Emergency Rescue Center just announced it has found signal of the missing plane at 9.50am 120 miles South West of Ca Mau cape, the Southern-most point of Vietnam.

The signal is believed to be the ELT (Emergency Locator Transmittor) , which can be activated manually by the flight crew or automatically upon impact.

A Malaysia Airlines flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, China has gone missing, the airline said.

Earlier this morning, MAS confirmed that flight MH370 had lost contact with the Subang Air Traffic Control at 2.40am today (March 8th, 2014)

Flight MH370, operated on the B777-200 aircraft, departed Kuala Lumpur at 12.41am and was expected to land in Beijing at 6.30am the same day. The flight was carrying a total number of 227 passengers (including 2 infants), 12 crew members.

Malaysia Airlines is currently working with the authorities who have activated their Search and Rescue team to locate the aircraft.

Speaking on CNN's AC360, MAS Operations Control Vice President Fuad Sharuji said they 'have no idea where the aircraft is right now'.

"We tried to call this aircraft through various means," he was quoted as saying. Sharuji told CNN that the aircraft was carrying 7.5 hours of fuel at the time of its disappearance (2.40am).

CNN also spoke to retired American Airlines Capt. Jim Tilmon who said the route taken by the aircraft had plenty of antennae, radar and radios for contact and that the plane was 'as sophisticated as any commercial airplane could possibly be with an excellent safety record'.

As some people have pointed out in the comments, the reported location of plane's last signal in that AP story contradicts the earlier post pointing to Flightglobal, which suggested the plane would have been off the east coast of Vietnam about two hours into the flight. At this stage we can't confirm which is correct.
Here is the report via Yahoo Singapore referring to the Vietnamese navy's claim that its military radar recorded the plane crashing into the sea. Stressing again that this is an unconfirmed report and the airline has not commented on it. Associated Press is also reporting named Vietnamese officals pinpointing more exactly where the last signal from the plane came from:
"Pham Hien, a Vietnamese search and rescue official, said that the signal was detected 120 nautical miles southwest of Vietnam's southernmost Ca Mau province. Lai Xuan Thanh, director of Vietnam's civil aviation authority, said that the plane was over the sea and bound for Vietnamese airspace but air traffic officials in the country were never able to make contact."
Malaysia Airlines has just posted a revised list of those nationalities, which shows the number of Australians at six rather than seven. Our list below omitted one Russian.

Just to recap on the details given earlier by the airline. Here are the number of passengers from each country believed to make up the 227 on board:

There are also 12 crew, of which we know the pilot, Captain Zaharie Ahmad Shah, and first officer Fariq Ab. Hamid, are both Malaysian.
Seven Australian citizens are among the passengers on the flight list. Our reporter in Canberra Daniel Hurst has the statement from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade with contact numbers for relatives.
"Malaysia Airlines has advised that it is contacting relatives of the passengers on the flight," the statement says."The airline has established a call centre – telephone +60 37884 1234 – for those seeking more information. The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade's 24 hour Consular Emergency Centre is contactable on 1 300 555 135, or +61 2 6261 3305 (if calling from overseas)."

Unconfirmed reports say Vietnamese media are reporting their navy has confirmed MH370 crashed into the ocean. There is a lot of unconfirmed information and speculation out there, but sadly this seems the most plausible outcome based on what we know so far.
Malaysia Airlines is pointing to an official page for "latest updates", although so far there is little more than its media statement, which contains nothing that wasn't known some time ago.
Here's a basic map showing the area of the flight's path. Flightglobal.com describes its route: "According to route data on flight tracking web site Flightaware, MH370 would have departed KL [next to where Shah Alam appears on this map], flown northeast across the Malaysian peninsula, whence it would have crossed the South China Sea, making landfall in Vietnam. The aircraft would have crossed the Mekong Delta region, and left the Vietnam coastline in the region of the central Vietnamese city of Da Nang. By this point the aircraft would have been about two hours into the flight – roughly where contact was lost. After this, the aircraft would have passed to the south of Hainan Island, before reaching the coast of southern China."
At Beijing airport authorities have provided buses for relatives to go to a hotel about 15 kilometres away for further briefings. Associated Press reported one woman on the bus was weeping while saying on a mobile phone, "They want us to go to the hotel. It can't be good!"

The names of the pilot and first officer have been released. The pilot is Captain Zaharie Ahmad Shah, a Malaysian aged 53. He joined Malaysia Airlines in 1981 and has 18,365 flying hours. First officer Fariq Ab. Hamid, also Malaysian, is 27. He joined the airline in 2007 and has 2,763 hours.
Here's a brief summary of the Boeing 777's safety record from NBC. It had a near faultless record until last year's Asiana Airlines crash at San Francisco, in which three people died (one in disputed circumstances on the ground). Investigations into the cause of that crash focused largely on miscommunication in the cockpit rather than any structural failing with the plane.
Vietnamese authorities now say the reports a signal had been detected were false. "We have been seeking but no signal from the plane yet," Pham Hien, director of a Vietnam maritime search and rescue co-ordination centre in Vung Tau, told Reuters. "The information on local media about the signal near the Cape Ca Mau was inaccurate," Pham said.
Also from the MAS media conference: the airline said the location of the last contact with air traffic control was 120 nautical miles off the east coast of the Malaysian town of Kota Bharu. Malaysian and Vietnamese authorities are working jointly on search operations in the area.
China state media says Vietnam authorities have detected signals from the missing plane, Associated Press reports.
James Fallows, following the story in The Atlantic, says whatever has happened to the plane is unlikely to be a result of chronic poor practices by Malaysia Airlines ("a good, competent and modern airline"). The Boeing 777 also has an excellent safety record.

In Malaysia, acting transport minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein took to Twitter to encourage family and friends of those on board to stay calm and not to speculate about events.

The Malaysian Airlines spokesman told the press conference in Kuala Lumpur the captain of the flight was a 53-year-old Malaysian, who had been with the company since 1981. The first officer was 27, and joined the company in 2007. The airline says it will hold another briefing in Beijing shortly.

Understandably there are very distressing scenes at Beijing airport, where some relatives of passengers on board have been arriving.
That was a Malaysia Airlines representatives giving details of those on board. There was little further concrete information on the fate of the plane. Earlier the airline's vice-presdient of operations control, Fuad Sharuji, told CNN: "At the moment we have no idea where this aircraft is right now." He said Subang air traffic control lost contact with flight MH370 at about 2.40am local time.
A press conference is under way. The nationalities on board have just been released:
China 152 plus one infant, Malaysia 38, Indonesia 12, Australia 7, France 3, US 3 plus one infant, NZ two, Ukraine two, Canada two, Russia 1, Italy one, Taiwan one, Netherlands one and Austria one.
Sketchy information has been coming in about the missing plane in the past hour or so. Fuad Sharuji, vice president of operations control for Malaysia Airlines, says rumours that it had landed safely in southern China were untrue, our China correspondent Tania Branigan reports.
"We do not know where the aircraft is right now," he told CNN. Asked if there had been any indication the plane was experiencing problems, he replied: "Not at all. The last report said the aircraft was flying at 35,000 feet... there were no calls from the crew [to indicate difficulties]."

KUALA LUMPUR: Tentera laut Vietnam mengesahkan pesawat Malaysia Airlines penerbangan MH370 yang dilaporkan hilang dalam penerbangan dari Kuala Lumpur ke Beijing awal hari ini terhempas ke Laut China Selatan, lapor akhbar utama Vietnam seperti dipetik oleh Yahoo News.

Laksamana Tentera Laut Vietnam, Ngo Van Phat dipetik oleh akhbar Tuoi Tre berkata radar tentera merakamkan pesawat itu terhempas ke dalam laut 246 kilometer ke selatan Pulau Phu Quoc.

Sementara itu, satu laporan lain menyebut tentera laut China telah mengerahkan dua kapal penyelamatnya ke Laut China Selatan untuk membantu operasi menyelamat.

Laporan ini sekaligus menamatkan spekulasi sebelum ini kononnya pesawat Boeing 777-200 itu membuat pendaratan cemas di Wilayah Nanning di selatan China.

Agensi berita Xinhua sebelum ini melaporkan pesawat berkenaan tidak memasuki ruang udara China dan tidak membuat sebarang hubungan dengan pusat kawalan trafik negara itu.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Airlines sedang berusaha menghubungi ahli keluarga 239 penumpang dan anak kapal penerbangan MH370 dari Kuala Lumpur ke Beijing yang terputus hubungan dengan Pusat Kawalan Trafik Subang, awal hari ini.

Ketua Pegawai Eksekutif Kumpulan MAS, Ahmad Jauhari Yahya berkata fokus pihaknya juga sekarang ialah bekerjasama dengan petugas kecemasan dan pihak berkuasa yang telah mengerahkan pasukan mencari dan menyelamat bagi mengesan pesawat berkenaan.

"Kami mendoakan semua penumpang dan anak kapal serta ahli keluarga mereka," katanya dalam satu kenyataan media.

Pesawat yang berlepas pada pukul 12.41 pagi Sabtu itu sepatutnya mendarat di Lapangan Antarabangsa Beijing pada pukul 6.30 pagi tadi.

Bagaimanapun, pesawat Boeing 777-200 itu terputus hubungan dengan pusat kawalan trafik pada pukul 2.40 pagi.

Ia membawa 239 penumpang termasuk 2 orang bayi dan 12 anak kapal yang terdiri daripada warganegara dari 13 buah negara.

Ahmad Jauhari menasihatkan ahli keluarga penumpang terlibat untuk terus ke Bangunan Sokongan Kemudahan yang terletak di Zon Sokongan Selatan KLIA bagi mendapatkan perkembangan terkini.

SEPANG: Malaysia Airlines mengesahkan penerbangan MH370 yang berlepas dari Kuala Lumpur terputus hubungan dengan menara kawalan udara Subang, 2.40 pagi ini.

Pesawat B777-200 itu berlepas dari Kuala Lumpur pada 12.41 tengah malam tadi untuk penerbangan ke Beijing.

Ia dijadualkan mendarat pada jam 6.30 pagi tadi.

Pesawat itu membawa 227 penumpang termasuk 2 bayi dan 12 anak kapal.

Malaysia Airlines kini bekerjasama dengan pihak berkuasa dan pasukan mencari dan menyelamat sedang mencari pesawat ini.
