No Sulu reinforcements in KK, Tawau, says IGP Posted: 07 Mar 2013 08:23 PM PST LAHAD DATU, March 8 — No Sulu reinforcements have arrived in Kota Kinabalu or Tawau to back their fellow militants in reclaiming Sabah, the authorities said today. No new casualties or arrests have been reported here either, Armed Forces chief Gen Tan Sri Zulkifeli Mohd Zin said at a joint press conference with Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar today. "There has been news going around through SMS and social media that the militants will enter Kota Kinabalu and Tawau," said Ismail (picture). "This news is not issued by the police and is not accurate," he added. A Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) activist reportedly said last Tuesday that thousands of Suluks have sailed to Sabah to help their fellow southern Filipino gunmen. Ismail also said today that the security forces have yet to capture militant group leader Agbimuddin Kiram since some 200 Sulu militants invaded Kampung Tanduo here about a month ago. |
Fresh explosions reported as Malaysian jets sighted heading to Lahad Datu Posted: 07 Mar 2013 08:19 PM PST "We saw three jet fighters flying towards the Kampung Tanduo area and then we heard around eight explosions at around 7.30am," said Bikail Maheli Badal (right), 56 who was in Embada Budi. This comes after security forces yesterday expanded their operations, which began on Tuesday, into Tanjung Labian from the initial areas of Kampung Tanduo and Tanjung Batu. Another villager here, Ali Johan, 32 said he heard at least two explosions. "I was inside boiling water when I heard the loud explosions," he said. Embada Budi is about 10km from away from Tanjung Labian by road but the direct distance is less than that. Read More / Baca Lagi >> |
Malaysia denies paying rent for Sabah: report Posted: 07 Mar 2013 08:17 PM PST Malaysian Foreign Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman said the Malaysian government does not recognize any outside claims that Sabah does not belong to Malaysia. He told Malaysia's TV3 that the 1878 agreement between Alfred Dent and Baron von Overbeck of the British North Borneo Company and the sultan of Sulu at that time stated that the sultan of Sulu ceded the region of North Borneo permanently, and the heir is entitled to receive annual payment of 5,300 Mexican Pesos. "It is not payment for rent, but as cession," he said. The report said Anifah and Philippine Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario were also puzzled why the Sabah standoff occurred when both countries are facing elections. The Malaysian foreign minister quoted a Reuters report that said followers of Jamalul Kiram III "had been invited to Sabah by a Malaysian opposition politician to discuss land issues." Anifah said he had urged del Rosario to investigate the claim. Read More / Baca Lagi >> |
‘Poorest’ sultan sent Sulu followers to Sabah for better life Posted: 07 Mar 2013 07:59 PM PST KUALA LUMPUR, March 8 — The self-styled Sultan of Sulu Jamalul Kiram III has declared himself as the "poorest" Ruler in the world, saying that he had consented to his brother leading a group of armed followers to move to Sabah in search of work and a better life. "I'm the poorest sultan in the world," Jamalul told newswire Associated Press (AP) when interviewed in his tumble-down two-storey residence in a poor section of Manila, the capital city of the Philippines. The 74-year-old, who is one of nine claimants to the Sulu Sultanate, reportedly said that his sultanate's lack of power to help his followers had sparked off their move into Sabah's east coast over three weeks ago in what is seen as an intrusion by Malaysia and has resulted in deadly clashes with 52 Sulu militants and eight Malaysian policemen dead. His wife Fatima Celia said that Jamalul's family is now in debt due to the costly expenses incurred when he campaigned to be a senator in 2007. He was supported by former Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo but did not win the position. Jamalul was last year found to have kidney failure and had to go for dialysis, another costly burden which then caused his family to miss monthly payments for their house and almost had to give up the place if their friends had not assisted, Jamalul's wife reportedly said. Jamalul, who also has a heart condition, now spends most of his time in his bedroom — where there are two oxygen tanks — which also doubles up as an office. Read More / Baca Lagi >> |
Lahad Datu debacle: Umno faces the WRATH OF THE WORLD Posted: 07 Mar 2013 07:30 PM PST The Lahad Datu situation raises many questions and leaves some more unanswered. Each day passes with more surprises, confusion and allegations while lives are massacred on both sides. Read More / Baca Lagi >>Meanwhile, what appears most evident is that the BN political party is fighting two battles. One, it is taking various courses of action in the face of surmounting criticisms, allegations and suspicious curiosity coming in from three vantages. The Philippines, the Malaysian opposition parties, and the Malaysian citizens are expressing surprises, disagreement and criticisms on every action and in-action coming in from the BN leadership as well as the country's defense leaders. The other battle that BN appears to be either embroiled in (or engaged in) – depending on which side of the fence you sit in, is that seeming strategic attempt to weaken the Malaysian opposition block. Remember to be a govt of the people In the long run we may all be doing a dangerous injustice to nation and King and perhaps in all likelihood to our neighboring friends as well. Foremost, the government of the day needs to position itself as a government for and of the people, dedicated to safeguarding national sovereignty and not cloud itself with political party flavors or blinkered patronage in the process. The Lahad Datu situation is not a turf-war to fight out political party priorities. It is an affront on a nation's independence. and that must be clear in the mind of the prime minister of Malaysia. It must also be the top most priority of all those commissioned to lead in the safeguarding of the nation's defense. The Lahad Datu debacle should not be exploited, taken advantage of or even screened as a political opportunity to helm the BN or push the PR into a corner. The prime minister has that honorable and formidable duty to marshal both sides of the divide in defense of citizens and King. Anything less renders democracy dead and parliament a whitewash. The universal truth is, profiteering from or entrenching political feuds in the face of an external affront on the sovereignty and liberty of a nation and its citizens, respectively, is tantamount to treason of the highest order. Immediate review by Parliament needed |
Posted: 07 Mar 2013 07:29 PM PST Malaysia must also severe all diplomatic ties with the Philippines for the moment and if necessary suspend trade and bilateral activities over Manila's failure to stop the Sulu invasion. The armed invaders may not corporate and surrender hence the full force of the law and military might must fall on them. Malaysia cannot allow this situation to persist. There has been serious violation of both domestic and international laws that resulted in indiscriminate loss of life. The current situation cannot guarantee the safety and well-being of the people of Sabah and any operation to flush out the invaders would require time and considerable effort especially when they have now melted away. While all effort to identify must continue the government cannot compromise and must immediately establish a temporary safety corridor. Every humanitarian help and assistance must continue and it is also the duty of the government to ensure that the unfortunate conflict does not arrive in Sarawak and to the Peninsular. Thus there is an immediate and urgent need to beef up coastal and airport securities and eliminate domestic Suluk uprising. For the moment the question of resolving and/or negotiating does not arise when the Sultan of Sulu and his gunmen has chosen the path of violence and deliberately and intentionally defied the sovereignty of Malaysia and its authorities. |

Malaysia fears World Court solution over Sabah claim, says columnist Posted: 07 Mar 2013 07:22 PM PST KUALA LUMPUR, March 8 — Proof showing that Sabah "clearly" belongs to the Sultanate of Sulu has caused Malaysia to be fearful of bringing the dispute to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) or to the table for talks, a columnist for a Manila-based paper has claimed. In an opinion piece titled "Irony: Malaysian-trained Sulu fighters", Neal H. Cruz said both the Philippine and Malaysian governments could "persuade" the Filipino Muslim rebels in Sabah to leave the state that is part of Malaysia, by either entering into negotiations or going to the ICJ. "That is for Malaysia to either agree to take the Sultanate of Sulu's claim to Sabah to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) or to negotiate with the Philippine government and the sultanate, with a definite date for the talks to start," he wrote yesterday. But he said Malaysia is fearful of taking either option, saying that the country was holding on to Sabah by "sheer force of arms", possibly hinting at Malaysia's show of military muscle with its all-out strike on Tuesday on the Sulu gunmen who had intruded Sabah's east coast over three weeks ago to press the Sultanate of Sulu's claim on the land. "Why is Malaysia afraid to do either? Because historical and documentary evidence clearly prove that Sabah belongs to the Sultanate of Sulu. Read More / Baca Lagi >> |
Anwar files RM100mil suit against TV3, Utusan over allegations of links to Lahad Datu intrusion Posted: 07 Mar 2013 07:17 PM PST KUALA LUMPUR: Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has filed a RM100mil defamation suit against TV3 and Utusan Melayu (M) Bhd for linking him to the intrusion by an armed Sulu group in Lahad Datu. The suit was filed at the KL High Court civil registry here Friday, naming Utusan and TV3 as defendants. His lawyer N. Surendran said they were also applying for an injunction to stop the defendants from publishing or broadcasting any defamatory words against him. On Thursday, Anwar denied meeting the self-proclaimed Sultan of Sulu or having any involvement in the attacks on the east coast of Sabah, where Malaysian security forces have been conducting search and mopping up operations after an all-out attack on the group Tuesday. He told Radyo Inquirer 990AM in an exclusive interview that he had "made it very clear" that he had not met with the Sultan of Sulu who he didn't know and that there were many claimants (to the throne). Anwar said the presence of insurgents was "unacceptable" and blamed the local mainstream media for spinning the issue. Last Friday, the Philippine Daily Inquirer ran a news piece based on Filipino army intelligence sources, which stated that a Sabah politician allied to Anwar had met with the armed intruders. |
Initial talks with Kirams had gone smoothly, DOJ exec reveals Posted: 07 Mar 2013 07:13 PM PST Justice assistant secretary Zabedin Azis said talks between Kiram and his team, also composed of Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao Gov. Mujiv Hataman, had gone smoothly on February 18 and 19. The talks took place at the Kiram residence in Taguig City. Azis said during those talks, the Sultan's camp showed signs of being open to recalling their "Royal Army" already holed up at the time in the village of Lahad Datu, Sabah. He said his team relayed President Aquino's message to the Kirams: call back the armed men to prevent bloodshed, then talks on the Sultanate's claim to Sabah will take place after. Azis clarified at no point during the Feb. 18 and Feb. 19 talks did their team threaten the Kirams. In fact, he said, the team told the Kirams at the time that no charges will be filed against their men should they heed the President's call. Read More / Baca Lagi >> |
