Why is the weather up North so cold and snowy and in Southern Europe it's like Spring?

... I mean, there's not sooooo big a distance... even in Italy, the north is frozen and the south is sunny... is there some geographical explanation for this?

and how long do you think the good weather will last?!

thanks :)

Answer on Why is the weather up North so cold and snowy and in Southern Europe it's like Spring?

What happens this year is that the polar front is all the way down to ... yes, north Italy. This is not unusual at this time of the year. During the winter, the north pole is in a six months night and it gets very cold. This increase the size of the polar high pressure. What is unusual, though, is that it lasts very long. In addition to that, several polar lows have moved southward, bringing snow and air masses from Siberia. Again, polar lows happen every winter but usually not that long.

If you go here:

Then select the maps called: T&GH at 500 hPa, you will see what is called the temperature and geopotential height at 500 hPa. That is the temperature at roughly 5,000 meter up in the atmosphere, half way through the troposphere and a place where the surface influence of the sea and terrain is not affecting.

At that altitude you can very clearly see the polar front; a sharp transition between relatively mild and cold air. You will notice that the cold air moves a long way across Europe, toward the Mediterranean. That is the result of the front being quite south, and the polar lows bringing cold air over France. As a reference point, it is not unusual that the polar front is over Iceland during the summer. Quite a difference, isn't it?
