Read More / Baca Lagi >> |
Instead of yapping away, Najib and Soi Lek should take tuition from Bersih Posted: 16 Jul 2011 07:26 PM PDT In the weeks leading up to Bersih and in its aftermath, we have been hearing some of the most funny statements uttered by those in power. And most of these statements are mere comments akin to a one-up-on-the-opponent kind. Read More / Baca Lagi >>Bersih placed a figure of 50,000 at the rally that saw the worst display of police brutality in the country's history against peaceful marchers. And this figure is not one that can be skewed owing to the numerous photos and video evidence uploaded and made available by the marchers themselves. So it is quite a mystery how the police can place the number at 5,000 - 6,000. The police must have been blinded by the smoke-screen from all the tear-gas they fired onto the marchers. And it has been a numbers game since. Commenters from both sides have placed their own number to the gathering. |

Read More / Baca Lagi >> |

Posted: 16 Jul 2011 07:01 PM PDT BN should stop destroying Malaysia's financial reputation with irresponsible statements like freezing the assets of those deemed risky to the nation's security because they participate in Bersih rallies calling for clean and fair elections as well as receive funding from non-profit foreign NGOs. Bersih had clarified that money the group received from two US organisations - the National Democratic Institute (NDI) and Open Society Institute (OSI) - were for other projects unrelated to the July 9 march. DAP strongly condemns Deputy Finance Minister Awang Adek Hussin's irresponsible statement that Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) can freeze the assets of those believed to be participating in activities if the police recommend so. Such actions are detrimental to Malaysia's efforts to establish itself as a safe haven for capital and investments. Read More / Baca Lagi >> |

Siapa kata Bersih 2.0 gagal, inilah hasilnya... Read More / Baca Lagi >> |

Posted: 16 Jul 2011 06:47 PM PDT June Rubis A few days ago, I had a conversation with a taxi driver who was excited about July 9th. While he had supported the rally, and could list out the points for free and fair elections, he was too scared to attend because of the heavy police presence. He told me of a Vietnamese passenger he had that day, who was curious about the many roadblocks around the city. "I explained to him about the rally, and how the police were there to stop the people from entering the city." The Vietnamese was so surprised at his explanation, he told me. "He said that it should be the other way around. That the police should be impartial, be there to protect the people, and let them rally for a few hours. He told me Malaysia is not a democracy. It's true, isn't it? Malaysia isn't a democracy?" Read More / Baca Lagi >> |

Najib: I don't want to be PM for a moment if I don't have the people's support Posted: 16 Jul 2011 06:42 PM PDT Rounding off a controversial 4-day official visit to the UK, Prime Minister Najib Razak tried to allay concerns that he would cling to power at all costs, declaring he would step down immediately if he did not have the support of the people. Read More / Baca Lagi >>But it is doubtful if he managed to convince many that he would not resort to further violence in the near future. "If you are still unhappy with the Government, let's square it out in the elections and let the people decide. It is my sacred duty as a leader to protect the lives of the people and property," Star reported Najib as saying on Saturday. "I don't want to be the Prime Minister for one moment if I do not have the support of the people." No new reforms, same old party line Najib had stunned his nation with a bizarre string of decisions that ended with unpredented police violence against a civilians march for and free elections on July 9. It also sparked concern amongst the international community. |
A clean sweep for Bersih: Grim and uncertain future for the cousins Posted: 16 Jul 2011 06:41 PM PDT by Clive Kessler It was quite a day. Last Saturday Kuala Lumpur saw two foolish men destroy not only themselves, the government that they lead and their remaining reputation for political sagacity and moderation. They also ended what was left of the indispensable myth of a benign Malaysia. Unhappily for Malaysia, its fate and future these last two weeks have been largely in the hands of two weak, brittle men who wish to be seen as strong and act tough — and who were always susceptible to the insinuations, challenges and "helpful" advice of the genuine "hard men" around them. The cousins and the King Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak and the Home Affairs Minister Hishammuddin Tun Hussein are cousins. Their fathers, married to two well-placed sisters, were the nation's second and third Prime Ministers. Najib is now the sixth, and Hishammuddin, it is assumed, would like to follow him some time. Both were born to want, and from early in life sought, to emulate their redoubtable fathers, and were probably destined to fail. Their moment of truth came this week. |
Najib's hand weakens post-Bersih, while Muhyiddin and Taib smile and wait Posted: 16 Jul 2011 06:38 PM PDT Most Sarawakians who tend to take a backseat where national issues are concerned have woken up after the Bersih walk for clean and fair elections held on July 9. Of course, no one is saying they have been inspired to the point that they are willing to buy the yellow Bersih T-shirt and are ready to rush off to join the next protest. But certainly, they are interested. Their fancy has been tickled and they are keeping track of what's going on. In fact, there are many debates and 'theories' about what will happen to the BN coalition that has governed the country for the past 5 decades, and in particular, Prime Minister Najib Razak. When contacted by Malaysia Chronicle, Sarawak PKR chief Baru Bian said the rally was indeed an eye opener. He had led a team to Kuala Lumpur to participate in the rally and he was amazed at the unity of the people who were there. Read More / Baca Lagi >> |

Malaysian Prime Minister to Meet With Pope in Gesture to Christians Posted: 16 Jul 2011 07:57 AM PDT Forming ties with the Vatican would help the government demonstrate to Malaysian Christians that it respects different religions on an international level, Mr. Shamsul said. It would also contribute to Mr. Najib's "1Malaysia" policy, which promotes national unity and inclusiveness, he added. A decision by Prime Minister Najib Razak to meet with on Monday signals a wish to mend ties with 's Christians following a series of incidents, including the firebombing of churches, that have strained interfaith relations in this Muslim-majority nation, analysts say. Mr. Najib is scheduled to visit Benedict at Castel Gandolfo, the pope's summer residence near Rome, for talks that are expected to touch on the possibility of Malaysia establishing diplomatic relations with the Vatican.
