Bersih 2.0 : Lying Najib, recalcitrant Umno Posted: 11 Jul 2011 09:24 PM PDT A 70-year-old political activist has warned Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak that Sabahans are 'reading cautiously' his handling of the situation in Kuala Lumpur. KOTA KINABALU: A 70-year-old political activist from Panampang who is known to both the opposition and the ruling regime has expressed shock at the way Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak has handled Bersih 2.0′s call for electoral reforms.Having closely monitored Najib's reaction to Bersih 2.0 from the onset of its chairman S Ambiga's announcement on June 8, activist Fredoline Edwin Lojingki is both amused and angered by his irrational comments "I listened and am amused at the comments by various Umno leaders including Najib's on the peaceful Bersih rally. "Especially on the point where they accused Bersih organisers of causing shop and business operators to lose business last Saturday. "Those accusations are unfair…" he said in a statement today. Bersih 2.0 : Were cops trying to trap Ambiga’s group? Posted: 11 Jul 2011 09:23 PM PDT Police may have had punishment in mind when they shot tear gas into a tunnel. This happened to be the group led by Bersih leader S Ambiga and opposition leaders Anwar Ibrahim, Abdul Hadi Awang, Tian Chua and Nurul Izzah Anwar. FMT reporter Zefry Dahalan filed the following first person account. "I was with some journalists following the group that had Bersih chief Ambiga and the top Pakatan Rakyat leaders in the front line. They marched from KL Hilton into the KL Sentral station and went down the narrow staircase that leads to the tunnel that links with Jalan Tun Sambanthan. Read More / Baca Lagi >>
Bersih 2.0 : How Bersih cleansed my Malaysian soul Posted: 11 Jul 2011 09:17 PM PDT Andrew Chee JULY 12 — I'm a 28 moving on to 29-year-old man in Kuala Lumpur, the place where in 2008 I decided to get a fresh start. I am originally from Malacca and had been in Singapore for about 4½ years prior to moving to KL. Read More / Baca Lagi >>For the purposes of this story, let's just say the sum of my life experiences has made me grouchy, surly, disgruntled and yes… RACIST. But I was a funny type of racist; I'm Chinese but have part-Baba heritage with very Westernised conditioning and cannot, for the life of me, speak any sort of Chinese dialect (save to order food). I disliked the Malays and Indians for the usual stereotypical reasons, and I disliked the Chinese even more for being too "Cina" and I disliked the "lain-lains" for just being "lain-lain." Sure, I have friends from other races; my very best friends are Malay Singaporeans, and my childhood friend, who is in KL as well, is a Chindian. My project band which wrote a song for the MyConstitution album consisted of me, two Chinese girls, an Indian guy, a Sindhi, and two Malay guys. We were quite 1 Malaysia. Yet I could not discard my racial prejudices.

What Umno fears most: Bersih 2.0 is spreading into the Malay heartland Posted: 11 Jul 2011 09:06 PM PDT What UMNO has been dreading is starting to happen - Bersih 2.0 is starting to spread and into the hard-to-penetrate Malay middle ground. Read More / Baca Lagi >>Something that pundits say the UMNO top leadership should take close note of, even as Prime Minister Najib Razak and his cousin Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein try to damage control the fiasco they created due to mishandling and disconnect with the rest of the nation. Not only did the Najib administration fail to stop the wave of social reform consciousness, Bersih 2.0 now looks like being a full-fledged contagion thanks to the cousins' high-profile and controversial handling of the matter. Those who came to attend the rally have gone home and exactly like their counterparts in cyberspace, they cannot get enough of recounting their July 9 experiences to their family, friends and village mates. As PAS president Hadi Awang has warned, Bersih 2.0 is just the beginning. More and larger protests will sweep the country if Najib and UMNO continue to sit their ivory and ignore the discontent amonst the people. "This is just a preamble to the people's uprising and if they are not prepared to make any reforms to the election system and democracy, bigger uprising will happen anytime, and it is not necessarily before election, but can be also after election," warned Hadi.
Bersih slam authorities for denying heavy-handed action Posted: 11 Jul 2011 08:50 PM PDT Bersih 2.0 would like to formally extend its deepest condolences to the family of Allahyarham Baharuddin Ahmad on his passing on. From the reports we received, the primary factor in this tragic loss of life was the heavy handed action of the police and their complete failure to provide proper and timely medical aid to Allahyarham Baharuddin Ahmad. This was only one of many actions by the police on the 9th of July that resulted in severe injury. There is clear video evidence showing the police firing tear gas into the compound of Tung Shin Hospital as well as numerous instances of police beating unarmed members of the public. A number of individuals including Member of Parliament YB Khalid Samad was also badly hurt when hit by a tear gas canister fired into the crowd. There are numerous other such instances. We encourage participants with photographic and video graphic evidence of such incidents to submit them to us. Read More / Baca Lagi >>
Bersih 2.0 : KL better off without ‘padded rolls, vote buying’, says Singapore ST Posted: 11 Jul 2011 08:49 PM PDT KUALA LUMPUR, July 12 — Malaysia's top leadership would be better off working to deliver its promised reforms and give substance to the 1 Malaysia vision than stoop to a partisan approach in dealing with dissent, the Singapore Straits Times said today. Read More / Baca Lagi >>The influential daily also remarked in its editorial today that last Saturday's Bersih 2.0 rally here has thrown the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition on the backfoot even though it managed to deliver a counter-punch to the civil society movement. The Singapore paper is privately-owned but is often seen to reflect the republic's establishment voice, which appears keen to keep its current good ties with Putrajaya while protecting the republic's interest. In the piece titled "A very Malaysian impediment", the paper remarked that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has gained widespread support as a "moderate leader" through his liberalisation of some race-based practices to a certain extent while being mindful of keeping its majority Malay sensibilities. "But it would be better for the country if it could move more rapidly to give substance to Mr Najib's vision of '1 Malaysia' — an inclusive political culture in which all races can be comfortable with one another," it said. The paper further remarked that Malaysian debate is now framed in an even more polarised racial context of "us-against-them contest" — where the Malays fear an erosion of their privileges and political primacy while the non-Malays demand fairness.

Bersih 2.0: Even a four-year-old gets it Posted: 11 Jul 2011 08:18 PM PDT Lim Li Ching JULY 12 — Eyes still smarting from the tear gas, legs aching from all that walking, the first thing that greeted me when I reached home was my four-year-old daughter launching herself into my arms. Immediately, all the anxiety and stress fled from me, as cuddles and kisses abounded. Read More / Baca Lagi >>She asked: "Mama, did you go for the march?" Surprised, as I had only told her I had gone out to do something important, I answered: "Yes." Perhaps she had overhead the adults talking. I showed her the pictures and video clips on my phone, and when I was looking at the news online, she scrolled through the pictures that the websites had posted. "These are pictures from the march!" she called out excitedly to her two-year old brother. He came hurtling next to us and repeated: "March!" Then, true to his food-loving form, said, "That's a burger!", pointing to the fast-food ad banner on the screen. "See all these people in yellow? They're good people", I explained. "They're fighting for change in Malaysia, so that we can have a better future." "Who are these?" she asked, pointing to an ominous picture of the FRU in a line, shields up, batons at-the-ready.

WSJ: Government has caused fear and repression Posted: 11 Jul 2011 08:12 PM PDT KUALA LUMPUR, July 12 — The Wall Street Journal said today the government's response to the Bersih 2.0 rally on Saturday has created an environment of fear and repression. Read More / Baca Lagi >>However, the international daily added that with an energised Pakatan Rakyat (PR), the Najib administration may find that the support of the "silent majority" will soon speak up against the ruling coalition. "On Sunday, Mr Najib called on the 'silent majority' of Malaysians, who he claims opposed Bersih, to speak up. If he continues to create an environment of fear and repression, he may find this silent majority speaking up soon, but against him," the newspaper wrote. Calling the event "Crackdown 2.0," the WSJ said that "based on the evidence of this weekend's rally in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysians aspire for a more competitive political system than what they have." "Also based on this weekend's evidence, Prime Minister (Datuk Seri) Najib Razak isn't prepared to give it to them," it added.
