Bersih 2.0 : King’s ‘independence’ surprises Umno leaders, say sources

Posted: 07 Jul 2011 05:06 PM PDT

KUALA LUMPUR, July 8 — The Yang di-Pertuan Agong's "independence" over the Bersih issue through his edict and meeting the electoral reform group is causing some consternation among Umno politicians, including several ministers, sources say.
The Malaysian Insider understands that they are upset by Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin's decision to grant an audience to Bersih 2.0 chairman Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan last Tuesday, arguing that it is outside his constitutional powers.

Government officials also confirmed that there has been a series of tooing and froing of the draft of the King's statement between the palace and the Najib administration before Istana Negara issued what amounted to measured advice late Sunday. "Some Umno politicians felt that the King's statement should have been more strongly worded against Bersih. And some ministers are also upset that the King met Ambiga," a source told The Malaysian Insider.
A Cabinet minister confirmed with The Malaysian Insider that dissenting views were raised during the weekly Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
"They felt that the Agong is not the executive arm of the administration and the Agong must subscribe to the constitutional monarchy system where he acts on advice of the PM.

In S'wak on July 9, breakfast with DAP in yellow, shopping with PKR also in yellow

Posted: 07 Jul 2011 05:03 PM PDT

In S'wak on July 9, breakfast with DAP in yellow, shopping with PKR also in yellowKUCHING - There has never been in the history of the state that a colour has caused so much controversy. Yellow is certainly the color of the month, a color that has been so talked about.
The opposition parties here, the DAP and the PKR, are going all out to show their support for the Bersih movement because they believe in the need to fight for a just and fair general election.
And while the police are warning the people not to wear this colour on Saturday, supporters of Bersih and Pakatan are saying, don anything that is yellow to show support for Bersih, an elections watchdog body that is championing the cause for a free and fair election.
Police action: Even talking about Bersih is disallowed
In Kuching, OCPD Mun Kock Keong said he is fully prepared for any eventuality. He is all ready to get anyone who breaks the law and according to him, that would include anyone or group wearing yellow and talking. Talking? Yes, even talking, Mun confirmed. Anyone talking about Bersih or holding any banner with the word 'Bersih' will be arrested as it is an outlawed society.

Bersih 2.0 : Arrogant Umno now the enemy of the people and Monarchy

Posted: 07 Jul 2011 04:58 PM PDT

Arrogant Umno now the enemy of the people and MonarchyBersih 2.0 is a national milestone on the road to better governance. It is obviously an international concern drawing global attention and even support. But UMNO's persistence in adamantly clinging to its high and mighty pole of pedestal politics is only driving the rakyat into a tight corner.
And that in itself is very volatile – an eventuality that would have been no fault of the masses.
The developments surrounding Bersih 2.0's determined struggle is common knowledge that even the cheaply hired immigrant laborer is able to hold coherent conversation on the subject. But what is most significant is that despite the country's constitutional monarch welcoming the representatives of the rakyat's Bersih 2.0 rally plan to an extremely rare audience, UMNO is still walking the streets with guns drawn.

Bersih 2.0 : Running Scared in Malaysia

Posted: 07 Jul 2011 04:56 PM PDT

Running Scared in MalaysiaThe Malaysian government has pulled out all the stops to prevent an opposition rally this weekend. This week, army units conducted crowd control exercises with banners that said, "Disperse or we will shoot!" The police set up roadblocks and arrested Malaysians simply for wearing yellow T-shirts, the signature color of Bersih, a coalition of 62 nongovernmental organizations that demands changes in Malaysia's electoral system. To date, the police have arrested over 250 supporters of Bersih, claiming that they are "waging war against the king."
Then something unprecedented happened. Malaysia's King Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin, allegedly the target of Bersih's campaign, intervened. He called on both Prime Minister Najib Razak and Bersih to resolve their differences in a spirit of harmony and cooperation, for the good of the nation.

Sabah Bersih awaits police permit

Sabah Bersih is expecting a three-fold increase in rally participants if the police approves its application to hold the gathering in the Foochow Association Auditorium.

KOTA KINABALU: The organisers of the Bersih 2.0 campaign in Sabah are optimistic that the state police commissioner will give them the go ahead now that the prime minister has allowed Bersih to hold its rally in a stadium.
Sabah Bersih secretary Chester Pang said they submitted a fresh application yesterday for the July 9 campaign.
The police rejected their earlier application a few days ago.
The new application is for the Sabah rally to be held at the Foo Chow Association Auditorium instead of Padang Merdeka as planned earlier.
Pang said the time of the event remained as from 2pm to 4pm.
"We have paid for the rental of the venue and we are hoping that the police will consider our application this time since it will be held indoors," he said.

Muslimat PAS cabar Hisham buktikan Bersih haram

Bersih and the Fall of Reason

Posted: 07 Jul 2011 09:01 AM PDT

"I love those who can smile in trouble, who can gather strength from distress, and grow brave by reflection. 'Tis the business of little minds to shrink, but they whose heart is firm, and whose conscience approves their conduct, will pursue their principles unto death." : Thomas Paine
The events unfolding before our eyes in the past few weeks say a lot about us as a collection of individuals; as a society and as a people. What is clear  however is the sad fact that when we are faced with adversity, we tend to lose our head and retreat into the same old dark and cold cave of emotions, of irrationality and of convenient rhetoric.
Above all, we abandon the very faculty which differentiates us from all other primates, namely, our ability to reason. That is the saddest reflection of us, as a nation.

From the BN viewpoint: Illegal rally, don't be fooled by it!

Posted: 07 Jul 2011 08:57 AM PDT

From the BN viewpoint: Illegal rally, don't be fooled by it!For weeks, they were under the media glare for wanting to organise an illegal rally.
Their demands for a so-called clean electoral process was publicised and heard all over the country.
In fact, they received more than sufficient publicity and some support for their cause in the new media, apart from considerable objections and condemnation from groups, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and individuals opposed to the illegal rally.
They were even granted an audience by His Majesty, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
Now, if all those were still not enough, what more does the outlawed Bersih and its leader, Datuk S. Ambiga, want?, asked University Teknologi Mara (UiTM) political science lecturer Che Hamdan Mohd Razali.
Some 48 hours left to Saturday and the group of trouble-makers was said to want to continue with their illegal rally, albeit in a stadium but, still with no guarantee that it will be held in peace.
Now, many do not believe anymore in the reason Ambiga gave that her group -- not registered with the Registrar of Societies (RoS) -- was to present their unhappiness with the Election Commission (EC) running the elections, and allegedly pro-Barisan Nasional (BN) government.
