How do different countries celebrate Christmas? Posted: 30 Jun 2011 11:50 PM PDT Countries like Italy, Germany, Russia, China, Japan, Finland, Sweden, England, and so on Answer on How do different countries celebrate Christmas? I don't know that much about how Christmas is celebrated in these countries, but I do know some things. I will share what I can about Germany, Italy and Japan. I've also added links about Christmas around the world for you to look at. In Japan, Christmas is a romantic holiday... especially Christmas Eve. On Christmas Eve in Tokyo it is almost impossible to get into a nice, romantic restaurant because they are booked far in advance and everyone wants to go out with their significant others. There is a saying in Japan about women who stay single after they are 30. They are sometimes called "day-old Christmas cakes" because many Japanese people have special Christmas cakes, but it is unfashionable to buy them after the holiday. It is fashionable to decorate like Americans and Europeans in some areas of Japan, and sometimes you can even see Hello Kitty dressed up as Santa in bigger cities. There are some Christians in Japan, and they celebrate Christmas as a holy day like all Christians. Germany is considered by many to be the country of origin for many Christmas decorating traditions, especially the Christmas Tree. Also, in Germany there are many markets and carnivals to celebrate Christmas and buy traditional crafts to decorate or to give as gifts. Italians have a fascinating tradition: Befana. Befana is a witch who brings presents to good children on Christmas Eve. Santa (St. Nicholas) has already come to Italian children because he visits them on his "day," St. Nicholas Day, December 6th. |
