Is it really the benefit system or is it they are more likely to speak or understand English that drives them, rather than sending them to Spain, Greece or Finland ? Are our wages so much better than, say Germany or the Netherlands ? Can they sign on easier or get housing benefit quicker than, say France, Italy or Luxembourg ? Any clues as to the relevent options facing your average Piotr or Stanislav ? Answer on With so much immigration, are UK benefits so much better than other EU countries or how do they differ ? That's an interesting question, whether UK benefits are more generous, and whether access to them by non-nationals is easier here than in other countries. However, it's quite clear that the main reason the Poles etc come here is that in 2004 only the UK, Ireland, and Sweden opened their labour markets to the new EU states, although more have done so since, and the rest must do so by 2011. These three countries of course were also the ones with the lowest unemployment. My impression is that wages and benefits are broadly similar, allowing for the differing costs of living, across North-West Europe, ie France, Germany, Holland, Scandinavia, Uk, Ireland, but generally much less outside; but I'd really like to see some figures.  |
