Muhyiddin: Teachers must support govt of the day

MUAR: The Barisan Nasional Government has never questioned the loyalty of teachers, said Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

Teachers, the Deputy Prime Minister said, have been committed in their duties to help the nation develop over the years.

Speaking to all headmasters and principals in Johor here, he said teachers must support the Government that was elected by the rakyat through the democratic process.

He said teachers must be totally committed towards helping the Government implement policies to improve the country's education system.

"The Barisan (Nasional) leaders are picked by the people who gave them the mandate to form the Government of the day through a democratic process.

"This means that all government machinery, including teachers, should perform their duty with total commitment," he said when launching the Johor Education Department Bangkit Guru Untuk Negara (B-GUN) or Teachers Rise For the Nation programme in Pagoh yesterday.

B-GUN is a programme aimed at lifting the professionalism, character and role of the teachers in realising the government's aspiration.

Muhyiddin, who is also Education Minister, said he did not raise the matter because Normala Sudirman, the PAS candidate for the Tenang by-election, was a former teacher.

Teachers, he added, were important to society and were highly respected by the rakyat and some were even regarded as community leaders.

He said it would be good if teachers adopted the attitude that they and government leaders were one.

"We know teachers have a responsibility to help develop the people and the nation. Let us share the task together. Let's work to make Malaysia a developed nation," he added.
