Mean Girl Lindsay Lohan 'still a Justin Bieber fan' despite being criticized for her tax woes Posted: 20 Mar 2013 05:37 PM PDT Lindsay Lohan still 'remains a fan' of Justin Bieber despite being target for her financial woes during an online rant by the teen popstar. It seems the Mean Girls star is a nicer, more forgiving human being, as her rep revealed that despite the 'baby' hitmaker dissing her in his bizarre written rant posted on Instagram on Thursday, she "remains a fan" of the singer. Bieber apologised to Lohan, but only through website TMZ.com, and he didn't actually say the word sorry. He told the website that he realised right away that what he said at the end was wrong and distracted from what he was trying to say. |

Govt fails to get all-party support for parliament resolution on Sri Lanka Posted: 20 Mar 2013 05:34 PM PDT The prospect of sending out a collective message from Parliament on the Tamil issue looked set to be a non-starter Wednesday after opposition parties as well as allies refused to back a resolution proposed by the government in the backdrop of the DMK pulling out of the UPA on the issue. Barring the backing of Tamil Nadu parties such as the AIADMK and DMK, the government failed to secure the support of the BJP, Left as well as parties such as the SP for a strongly-worded resolution that virtually sought to pin Sri Lanka for alleged atrocities committed against its ethnic Tamils. "The meeting was inconclusive," Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kamal Nath told reporters after an all-party meeting convened by Lok Sabha speaker Meira Kumar. He said the meeting had been called to end the impasse in Parliament over the Lankan Tamil issue, but "it has not produced any results". The government, however, looked prepared to move amendments to the US-sponsored draft resolution on the issue that is to be taken up before the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on Friday. Sources said the amendments could be in the nature of getting Colombo to agree to set up an independent investigating agency which meets international approval, to look into the alleged atrocities. This formulation appeared to be a step forward from the US-sponsored draft resolution which calls for an independent and credible investigation. Dilip Sinha, India's permanent representative to the UN in Geneva, will consult the US and other interlocutors who are part of the UNHRC on India's proposal, the sources said. But there is a good chance this may not carry, they added. |
United SC pip East Bengal for maiden IFA Shield triumph Posted: 20 Mar 2013 05:32 PM PDT Kolkata: United SC rode on Ranty Martins' second-half strike to pip defending champions East Bengal and break their 14-match unbeaten run for their maiden IFA Shield title in Kolkata on Wednesday. The purple brigade also avenged their last year's loss in the Shield final as Man of the Match Martins' 80th minute goal denied overwhelming favourites East Bengal a record 25th title. In the repeat of last year's final which East Bengal had won on penalties, the giants looked like a shadow of their former self as they missed opportunities while Chidi's injury proved to be a big blow. East Bengal had defeated United SC 4-2 in the penalty shoot-out in the last year's final. This was the young Kolkata team's second big win after their 2010 Durand Cup triumph. In pursuit of their record 25th titles, East Bengal were tentative to start with as they played a watchful game in the first 45 minutes. Playing without their ace forward Edeh Chidi who was benched because of a hamstring pull, East Bengal clearly struggled to get into the act. The local giants sported a new look forwardline as 'super sub' Andrew Barisic, who scored the game-changer equaliser in their semifinal win over rivals Mohun Bagan, figured in the XI to lead the attack along side Baljit Singh. East Bengal had their first good chance in the 21st minute but midfielder Penn Orji shot it over from a long ranger outside the box. United also matched equally putting pressure on East Bengal who looked fatigued with hectic scheduling -- both at home and abroad. East Bengal, incidentally, arrived here Thursday after playing the AFC Cup in Vietnam. East Bengal had a close shave when Asif K's powerful rightfooter from the edge of the box was brilliantly fisted away by Gurpreet. The red-and-gold brigade had a brilliant move in the 34th minute when Penn's centre from left flank found Barisic whose diving header was thwarted by Mukherjee under the bar. The biggest miss came only a couple of minutes later when a surging Barisic could not get hold of a well-placed centre from Baljit Singh right in front of the goal. The Aussie collided with United goalkeeper Mukherjee as an alert United defender Bello Rasaq cleared the ball. The changeover also could not change the fortunes for East Bengal with Gurpreet once again showing a fine outing under the bar. The tall custodian averted a danger saving a Carlos Hernandez long-ranger as United kept pressure on the record 24 times Shield champions. With the frenzied red-and-gold fans getting impatient, Trevor Morgan resorted to their trump card Chidi who replaced Orji in the 78th minute hoping that the Nigerian would do a Barisic-act of the semifinal win. But it was a different day today. Two minutes later, Martins inflicted the biggest damage with an angular shot from a beautiful right-footer outstep from substitute Malswam Tulunga. East Bengal tried desperately and had some close calls towards the dying minutes but United SC defence held on with Mukherjee doing a fine job under the bar for an anticlimactic end to the Shield final. |
India DMK party ministers leave government Posted: 20 Mar 2013 05:31 PM PDT Five federal ministers from the DMK party, a former ally of India's ruling coalition, have submitted their resignations to PM Manmohan Singh. On Tuesday, the DMK withdrew from the Congress party-led government over its failure to condemn alleged atrocities against Sri Lankan Tamils. The party, with 18 MPs, held five ministerial posts in the government. A senior minister belonging to the Congress party said the government was "stable" and would remain in power. "We are not a lame duck government. No political party has come out and challenged its majority," Minister for Urban Development Kamal Nath told reporters on Wednesday. Continue reading the main story Indian press reaction Indian newspapers said the government was "safe" despite the withdrawal of support by a major ally. "DMK deserts UPA ship, but won't sink it", said The Hindu. "Although the UPA government is not in imminent danger of collapse, it no longer has the comfort of numbers." Hindustan Times said the government was on "thin ice" and its continuation in power would now be heavily dependent on other regional parties like Samajwadi Party (SP) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). The Times of India said that the "rickety" ruling coalition was looking "increasingly battered" and the next general election could be earlier than expected. The DMK is the main opposition party in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, which has a large population of Tamils. DMK chief M Karunanidhi had demanded that the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government pass a resolution in parliament condemning alleged atrocities committed by Sri Lankan forces against Tamils during the island's long civil war. He has also protested against the Indian government's position on a resolution on alleged war crimes in Sri Lanka which is before the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC). He wants India to push for stronger language in the resolution, including the use of the word "genocide". Late on Tuesday, party leaders met President Pranab Mukherjee and handed over a letter withdrawing the support of its MPs for the government. |

In first trip as President, Obama pledges eternal support to Israel Posted: 20 Mar 2013 05:27 PM PDT Vowing eternal support for America's top Mideast ally, US President Barack Obama on Wednesday assured Israel of his personal commitment to its security and delivered a blunt warning to its foes that the United States has the Jewish state's back. Arriving in Israel on his first trip to the country as president, Obama told the Israeli people at an extravagant welcoming ceremony that "peace must come to the Holy Land'' and that goal would not be achieved at Israel's expense. US backing for Israel will be a constant as the Middle East roils with revolution and Iran continues work on its nuclear program, he said. "The US is proud to stand with you as your strongest ally and your greatest friend,'' Obama said, accepting profuse thanks from Israeli President Shimon Peres and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on the tarmac at Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion International Airport. Obama called his visit "an opportunity to reaffirm the unbreakable bonds between our nations". Seeking to alter a perception that his government has been less supportive of Israel than previous US administrations, Obama declared the US-Israeli alliance "eternal.'' Even before leaving the airport, Obama offered a vivid display of the US commitment to Israeli security by saying: "The United States of America stands with the State of Israel because it is in our fundamental national security interest to stand with Israel.'' In response, Netanyahu thanked Obama for support. TOUR DIARIES RED LINE Red lines in Obama's and Netanyahu's foreign policy rhetoric are not-to-be-crossed warnings to Syria and Iran. As Obama prepared to tour a missile battery, an aide at the Tel Aviv airport directed him to follow the red line on the tarmac. "Bibi's (Netanyahu) always talking to me about red lines,'' Obama quipped. He joked that it was "a psychological ploy.'' Netanyahu replied: "It was minutely planned.'' AP |

Karunanidhi seeks to clear air over decision to pull out Posted: 20 Mar 2013 05:21 PM PDT Seeking to clear the air over its decision to pull out of UPA, DMK today said it took the step only after it became evident that there was no way the amendments suggested by it could be incorporated in the US resolution in the UNHRC against Sri Lanka. Responding to Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram's remarks questioning the party's change of mind even while its demands were being considered, DMK President M Karunanidhi also said there was no public announcement that the party's demands were being looked into it. "These are the reasons for DMK's announcement (of withdrawal of support to UPA) on March 19 and nothing else," he said in a statement here. Speaking in Delhi today, Chidambaram said DMK was aware of government's position on the issue but had changed its stand overnight. "We are not aware of the reasons why DMK changed its position between the night of March 18 and the morning of March 19," Chidambaram said. Recalling the meeting the three emissaries of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had with him on Monday, Karunanidhi said Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad had told reporters that they will report back to Singh about the meeting but had made no mention of Parliament adopting a resolution incorporating the amendments or moving them in UNHRC. The DMK patriarch said the next morning, information was recieved about the contents of the US resolution which he said had been revised four times. "There were no strong words against Lankan government and that the motion had been watered down. We came to know there was absolutely no chance of including the amendments suggested by us," he added. On Chidambaram's contention that amendments were possible, he said he was not sure whether there was still time for it. "We don't know if there is time still. Looks like the time for written amendments has elapsed", he added. Earlier, Karunanidhi blamed India's 'wholehearted acceptance and appreciation" of a report tabled by Sri Lanka at the UNHRC for the 'watering down' of the US resolution. "The watering down has been done on the basis of India whole-heartedly accepting and appreciating a report tabled by the Lankan government at UNHRC," he said, adding rights body Amnesty International had also accused India of diluting the resolution. Further, DMK's suggested amendments were not considered fully and therefore at this juncture, the party announced its stand of pulling out of UPA, he said. |
House delays debate over fuel pricing Posted: 20 Mar 2013 05:17 PM PDT AMMAN — A House majority on Wednesday voted to postpone deliberations on the government's decision to raise the prices of oil derivatives until the government presents its policy statement. Lawmakers said they will also wait until the government works out a new oil pricing mechanism at the end of this month, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. Several MPs have expressed dissatisfaction with a recent government decision to hike the prices of fuel in tandem with a rise on international markets. They have threatened to vote "nay" when the government of Abdullah Ensour seeks the Chamber's confidence. Ensour was widely criticised for an unprecedented decision to raise the prices of oil derivatives as part of an economic correction plan to address a widening budget deficit. The November decision triggered widespread protests and riots. Observers and officials say that a rise in electricity prices is inevitable on the backdrop of huge losses by the National Electric Power Company blamed on interruptions in the Egyptian gas supplies. Ensour is in the process of forming his ministerial team, the first parliamentary government in decades. Also on Wednesday, the Lower House held a session to examine the government's standing on several issues, during which deputies raised questions on services provided for citizens, rights of Jordanian prisoners in Israeli jails among other issues, according to Petra. |
Cincin Oh Cincin, Seperti Shahrizat, Kini Rosmah Pula Nak Memperlembukan Rakyat Malaysia Posted: 20 Mar 2013 05:17 PM PDT Pengakuan Rosmah berbelit-belit, tapi jelas cincin RM24 juta wujud Penjelasan Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor berhubung cincin RM24 juta dalam buku biografinya mengesahkan pendedahan KEADILAN mengenai barang kemas mewah itu memang wujud. – NS/KD |
Monarchy will remain an emblem of national unity — King Posted: 20 Mar 2013 05:14 PM PDT AMMAN — His Majesty King Abdullah on Wednesday said that the monarchy will maintain its role in Jordan as a symbol for national unity, a voice for all and will defend the basic values of Jordan's identity. In an interview with The Associated Press Amman Bureau Chief Jamal Halaby, His Majesty said that the key objective of the monarchy is to protect the prosperity and stability of the country, in addition to its unity and security. "The monarchy's paramount objective is to safeguard Jordan's prosperity, stability, security and unity, and work for the well-being of Jordanians, so they can meet their aspirations." The King described the upcoming phase as a new chapter in the Kingdom's history, and pointed to other powers that help shape the future. "We are writing a whole new chapter in our history, and I am not writing it alone — the people and their representatives, political forces, civil society are writing it with me," he said. Talking about the reforms, the King said: "Our reform roadmap has a clear trajectory, with milestones and prerequisites. Part of this trajectory involves keeping on developing our electoral system, through our constitutional institutions, so that it becomes more representative, maintains pluralism, provides a level playing field, and is conducive to the formation of party-based parliamentary governments." His Majesty spoke about the economic challenges Jordan is facing, attributing it partly to the international financial crisis, the Arab Spring and the Syrian conflict, among other things. "The global crisis had already hit our economy, then came the Arab Spring — tourism and investments slowed, and then Syrian refugees further strained our resources and infrastructure, trade through Syria all but halted," His Majesty said. "The coup de grace was the interruption in the supply of Egyptian gas, accounting for almost 80 per cent of our electricity generation needs, at a time of globally record-high oil prices. This alone has been costing the government more than $2b a year." The King underlined the costs of hosting around 500,000 Syrian refugees "or 9 per cent of our population. It's as if over 30 million refugees flooded into the US, the majority having crossed in less than 12 months". Direct costs of hosting Syrian refugees are $550 million annually at current refugee levels, which are expected to almost double over the next six to eight months. His Majesty expressed concern about the possibility that "the radicalisation of Syria, together with the deadlock in the peace process, would ignite the entire region. Another extremely dangerous scenario is the fragmentation of Syria, which would trigger sectarian conflicts across the region for generations to come". He also detailed how Jordan is operating within the limits of the Arab and international consensus, adding that he is "totally against sending Jordanian troops inside Syria and this has always been Jordanian policy. I am also against any foreign military intervention in Syria". The King expressed doubt that Bashar Assad could ever "pull the country back to its feet". "I believe we are past that point; too much destruction, too much blood. But ultimately this is something for the Syrian people to determine. The key question is whether Syria will plunge into chaos or there will be a transition, and what kind of transition this would be," His Majesty said. |
More Syrians flee to Jordan in face of rising border violence Posted: 20 Mar 2013 05:13 PM PDT AMMAN/MAFRAQ — Some 1,800 Syrians crossed into Jordan late Tuesday and early Wednesday, raising the total number of new arrivals for the month of March to some 35,000, according to the Jordan Armed Forces. Around 130 injured Syrians were among Wednesday's influx, security sources said, with many of them suffering from bullet wounds sustained while attempting to cross into Jordan. The influx came despite reported clashes between Syrian regime and rebel forces in the border region. Jordanian security sources and Syrian activists reported rising violence across southern Syria late Wednesday, with heavy shelling in the border villages of Al Hayt, Shajarah, Al Tafs, Basr Al Harir and Al Nayamat. The violence came as Damascus renewed an aerial assault designed to repel recent rebel gains along the Jordanian-Syrian border. According to relief officials, a rise in violence has closed off traditional crossing routes from southwest Syria, forcing hundreds of refugees to navigate lesser-travelled eastern desert routes. Jordanian border guards have reported refugees crossing through 60 different points along the 370-kilometre border since Damascus launched its most recent offensive late last week. Abu Momen Al Dimashqi, one of hundreds of Syrians who risked their lives to cross into Jordan this week, says the offensive has transformed the crossing into a game of "life or death". "The regime is bombing every village, every building and every vehicle in sight," he said shortly after crossing into the Kingdom along with a group of some 500 Syrians late Tuesday. "No one can guarantee safe passage into Jordan but God." There are currently over 450,000 Syrian refugees in Jordan. |
RJ to transfer all its flights to new airport terminal Thursday Posted: 20 Mar 2013 05:12 PM PDT AMMAN — Royal Jordanian (RJ) will transfer all its departing and arriving flights to the new terminal at Queen Alia International Airport (QAIA) as of Thursday, an RJ statement said Wednesday. "Royal Jordanian is pleased to receive its passengers at the new terminal, along with the passengers of all airlines operating at the airport," the airline said. "The new terminal is a landmark in the country and one of the most developed and advanced gateways in the region, in terms of construction and design, which blend Islamic architecture with the latest technology." RJ operates more than 100 flights every day, making up 60 per cent of the traffic at the airport, according to the statement. "The new terminal was built on over 103,000 square meters, double the area of the old terminal," RJ said. QAIA's new terminal increased the airport's capacity from 3.5 million to 9 million passengers per year, with plans to increase the capacity to 12 million passengers per year in the final stage by building more gates. The statement quoted RJ President/CEO Amer Hadidi as describing the new terminal as a milestone for the country. He noted that "the new terminal, with its cutting-edge features, constitutes an added value for RJ, since it is the hub of the airline's operations". Hadidi "expressed gratitude to the Airport International Group (AIG) that accomplished this vital project, with which he hopes to maintain good cooperation in the service of the Jordanian air transport industry", the statement added. The new terminal's inauguration coincides with the "50th anniversary of RJ, the national carrier of Jordan and is a pertinent reflection of the way the Jordanian air transport industry developed". "One significant feature at the new terminal is the complete separation of arrivals and departures. The upper floor, which contains 64 check-in counters, serves departing passengers, whereas the lower floor is dedicated to arriving passengers who receive their luggage on six conveyor belts," RJ said. "The new terminal will operate eight new gates; phase two will follow with four new gates, until it operates a total of twenty five gates in the final stage, in line with international standards, which require one gate for each half a million passengers." |
Obama promises undying US support to Israel Posted: 20 Mar 2013 05:11 PM PDT OCCUPIED JERUSALEM — Making his first official visit to Israel, US President Barack Obama pledged on Wednesday enduring support for Tel Aviv, as Israelis' concern over a nuclear-armed Iran has clouded US-Israeli relations. He also stressed the need for Middle East peace at the start of a three-day trip, which is aimed at resetting strained relations with both the Israelis and the Palestinians, but is not expected to provide new initiatives or substantial policy moves. Descending from Air Force One in bright spring sunshine, Obama briefly embraced Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, with whom he has a notoriously testy relationship, before offering smiles and handshakes to waiting ministers. "I see this visit as an opportunity to reaffirm the unbreakable bond between our nations, to restate America's unwavering commitment to Israel's security and to speak directly to the people of Israel and to your neighbours," Obama said at a red-carpet welcoming ceremony at Tel Aviv airport. "I am confident in declaring that our alliance is eternal, is forever," he said, adding the Hebrew word for forever — "Lanetzach" — to emphasis the upbeat message. Obama faces strong doubts among Israelis over his promise to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear bomb, as well as anxiety that the civil war in neighbouring Syria might spill over the border, with Western powers reluctant to get involved. The US president said last week he believed Iran was still more than a year away from developing an atomic weapon and is counselling nervous Israelis to show patience. Shortly after leaving Air Force One, Obama was told by an official to "follow the red line" marked on the tarmac as he set off to see an Israeli-made Iron Dome anti-missile battery. Standing alongside Netanyahu, Obama joked: "He's always talking to me about red lines" — a reference to Israel's demand that Washington establish a red line for Iran's nuclear programme. "So this is all a psychological ploy," he added. In his own welcoming remarks, Netanyahu cited an Israeli right to self-defence, which he said Obama supported. The Israeli leader had some fence-mending of his own to do with Obama after the 2012 US presidential campaign during which Netanyahu appeared to favour Obama's opponent, Republican Mitt Romney. "Thank you for unequivocally affirming Israel's sovereign right to defend itself by itself against any threat," the right-wing Israeli leader said. Speaking on the tarmac, Obama voiced his hopes for peace — without directly mentioning Palestinians, whom he will meet with on Thursday in the occupied West Bank. "We stand together because peace must come to the Holy Land," Obama said. "Even as we are clear eyed about the difficulties, we will never lose sight of the vision of an Israel at peace with its neighbours." US-sponsored peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians have been stalled since 2010 in a dispute over Israeli settlement-building in the occupied West Bank. The White House has deliberately minimised hopes of any major breakthroughs, a reversal from Obama's first four years in office when aides said he would visit Israel only if he had something concrete to accomplish. With both Obama and Netanyahu just starting new terms and mindful that they will have to work together on volatile issues for years to come, they will be looking to avoid the kind of public confrontation that has marked past encounters. The pair started a round of talks with their respective security advisers at around 5:30pm (1530 GMT) and are due to hold a news conference at 8:10pm, before heading back for further discussion over dinner. Shortly after landing in Tel Aviv, Obama's entourage flew by helicopter to nearby Jerusalem and then drove to his city centre hotel. Hundreds of banners boasting of "an unbreakable alliance" hung from lampposts, but only sparse crowds turned out to watch the president's motorcade drive through shut-off streets. Aware that many Israelis have reservations about him, Obama took steps to try to soften his image, smiling and joking with his guests, heaping praise on Israeli President Shimon Peres and appearing delighted as a group of schoolchildren sang for him. Obama will make a speech to a group of carefully screened Israeli students on Thursday afternoon, where he is expected once more to play up historic ties between the two nations. Annual US military aid to Israel is put at $3 billion. Earlier in the day, he will fly by helicopter the short distance between Jerusalem and the West Bank city of Ramallah to meet Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, avoiding having to cross the Israeli separation barrier that divides the cities. Abbas' allies have expressed bitter disappointment over the lack of fresh US moves, saying the United States should be doing much more to force Israel to halt settlement building in the West Bank on land Palestinians want for their state. "We say to Obama, visiting occupied Palestine is a terrible idea. If you want peace for two states, seek justice for us," said Jamal Jafar, an activist who took part in a protest on Wednesday, setting up a camp next to a proposed new settlement. Netanyahu told Obama at the airport that he was committed to securing peace with the Palestinians, but Western diplomats in Jerusalem remain largely sceptical. The Israeli leader has just forged a coalition containing strong supporters of settlements on land seized in the 1967 war. Along the reception line, Obama stopped only briefly to shake hands with pro-settler leader Naftali Bennett, but had a long exchange with new Finance Minister Yair Lapid, who heads a centrist movement and has said peacemaking is a priority. |
